Nine different boats competed for the Eagles

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University rowing team concluded its fall scrimmage schedule at Michigan State University Sunday, Oct. 9. Seven varsity boats raced on the Spartans' Grand River while two novice boats also competed.

Three Varsity Eight boats competed in a 3.5K head race while four Varsity Four boats took on four, three minute pieces. Novice boats participated in four, five minute pieces as well.

POST RACE QUOTES
"We really focused on the Head Race Pieces with the Varsity today," said Head Coach Kemp Savage. "Getting into a head race with seven other boats gives us a really good chance to practice our chute start and sustainable race pace. Our Novices also got their first taste of racing and we are looking forward to getting them out again at the end of October. "

"Today was a great starting point for our novices," Assistant Coach/Head Novice Coach Nicole Marek said. "It was exciting to see them experience their first side by side race pieces with another team and I'm looking forward to seeing how they continue to progress."

"Today was a great test of our resilience and I think we performed really well despite having an extremely difficult training week," said sophomore Lily Wilhelm (Noblesville, Ind.-Noblesville-Butler). "We have seen a big increase in speed lately because of the hard work we have been putting in at practice and it is really nice to see it pay off. We held our own against a Big 10 team today and I know we still have more speed in us."

UP NEXT
The Eagles begin their official fall schedule, Saturday, Oct. 22, when the Green and White travel to Boston, Mass. to race in the Head of the Charles regatta.
