YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – After a slow start to the day, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team picked it up in the afternoon to post the fifth-lowest score of the second round at the Shirley Spork Invitational, Oct. 3. The Eagles notched a 304 to jump two positions into fifth-place after opening with a 311 on the par 72, 6,100-yard Eagle Crest Golf Course setup.
Senior Natai Apichonlati (Bangkok, Thailand-The Regent's International School) is tied for seventh with a five-over 149 (74-75). Central Michigan University's Ashley Goh set one record and tied another for the Chippewas, as she sits atop the individual leaderboard by four shots over Bowling Green State University's MacKenzie Moore (74-71=145). Goh tied the CMU record with a three-under par 69 in the opening round and then posted an even-par 72 in the second round for a 36-hole 141 total. Her 141 (69-72) is the lowest for 36 holes in program history.
The blistering start sparked the Chippewas to a first-round 302; they followed in the afternoon with a 295 for a 597 total and stand in first place, eight shots ahead of second-place Bowling Green (605). Oakland University (609), Loyola University-Chicago (616), and EMU (617) round out the top-five.
How It Happened
Following Apichonlati's tie for seventh-place, sophomore Kyleigh Dull (Fremont, Ohio-Lakota) is knotted up in 17th place with rounds of 80 and 75 for a 155. Junior Anna Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland) garnered back-to-back rounds of 78 to for 23rd, while teammates Olivia Loberg (Bend, Ore.-Summit) and Alyssa DiMarcantonio(Maple, Ontario-Tommy Douglas Secondary School) are two shots back in 34th at 158 (81-77).
Junior Tatyana Nyambane (Nairobi, Kenya-Nord Anglia International School Dubai) and senior Adeline Lau (Sa Rawak, Malaysia-SMK Bintulu-Michigan Dearborn) are playing the tournament as individuals and their scores do not count toward the team total. Nyambane shot a 161 (81-80) for 41st and Lau managed a 182 (89-93) in 63rd place.
Up Next
The 10-team field includes six Mid-American Conference schools. The final round of the 54-hole stroke-play event is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 9 a.m. The Eagles will be paired with Loyola and Oakland.
