MUNCIE, Ind (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University football team will hit the road in search of its second Mid-American Conference victory of the season when it travels to Ball State University for a showdown with the Cardinals Saturday, Oct. 22. Kickoff from Scheumann Stadium in Muncie, Ind. is set for 2 p.m.
Eastern Michigan (4-3, 1-2 MAC) enters the contest in hopes of a bounce-back effort after falling to Northern Illinois, 39-10, in its most recent contest. Eastern faces off against a Ball State (4-3, 2-1 MAC) squad that is looking to turn momentum from its 25-21, comeback win over UConn, Oct. 15.
The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Jim Barbar and Marcus Ray on the call. The game will also be aired on WEMU (89.1 FM) and the Varsity Network app. Veteran broadcasters Tom Helmer (play-by-play), Rob Rubick (analyst), and Greg Steiner (in-game host) will provide the coverage.

SOW HITS MILESTONE: Senior offensive lineman Sidy Sow is one of the most consistent players in EMU program history. The Canadian-born offensive lineman made his 49th career start, against Northern Illinois, Oct. 15. That number ties former Eagle Vince Calhoun, who started 49 games for the Green and White between 2016-19, as the program's all-time best mark. Sow's 50 career games played sit just four marks behind all-time leaders Terry Myrick (2017-21) and Jake Julien (2017-21), who each took to the turf 54 times.

DRUMMOND ON THE SCENE: Senior Dylan Drummond tied for the team lead with three receptions against NIU, Oct. 15. Drummond has hauled in 13 receptions in just four games this season. His 3.25 receptions per game ranks second on the team, behind only fellow upperclassmen Tanner Knue, who has hauled in four receptions per game in 2022. Additionally, Drummond has led the team in receptions in 50 percent of his appearances this season (two games).

BACK-TO-BACK WITH MULTIPLE SACKS: Senior defensive end Jose Ramirez contributed two sacks against Northern Illinois, Oct. 15. He has recorded multiple sacks in back-to-back games (recorded program-record four at Western Michigan, Oct. 15) for the first time in his career.

SACK, SACK, SACK: In addition to claiming multiple sacks in consecutive contests, Jose Ramirez can also claim sacks in three-consecutive contests. That statistic is also a career first for the Lake Alfred, Fla. native. His previous best stretch was two games in-a-row with a sack, which came in week's eight and nine of the 2021 campaign, against Bowling Green, Oct. 23, and Toledo, Nov. 2.

JOSE IN THE RECORD BOOKS: Jose Ramirez is in the midst of making history at Eastern Michigan. Through seven games this season, he has a team-leading and career-best seven sacks for 48 yards, part of his 62 yards of tackles overall. Ramirez currently ranks ninth in Eastern history in sack yardage in a season with 48. Former Eagle Maxx Crosby ranks first in that category - he racked up 92 yards of sacks in 2017.  Additionally, he also joined the career sack yardage list, now ranking ninth with 84 yards overall in the category.
Additionally, Ramirez is now 10th in single-season TFL yardage and career tackle-for-loss yardage. The Lake Alfred, Fla. native is only the 10th Eastern player to tally 100 yards in TFLs.
Ramirez also used his two-sack day against NIU to move up the EMU career sack list, ending the day in eighth place with 15.5 career sacks.

BIG PLAY PAASKE: Sophomore tight end Andreas Paaske burst onto the scene against Northern Illinois, Oct. 15. The Denmark-born Eagle reeled in one catch for 75 yards and one score, the only touchdown of the afternoon for the Eagles. Paaske put the Eagles on the board with a 75-yard bomb from  Taylor Powell with 10:34 left in the first, his first career score at EMU. It was the second Eagle touchdown of 70 or more yards this season, the first since Tanner Knue hauled in a 74-yard score from Austin Smith against the University at Buffalo, Sept. 24. Paaske's score was also the longest EMU play from scrimmage on the season.

NEW LONG FOR POWELL: Senior quarterback Taylor Powell delivered the team's longest pass from scrimmage in 2022 when he hit Andreas Paaske for a 75-yard score against Northern Illinois, Oct. 15. The play is the longest of his career. His previous best was a 49-yard pass, which he completed in a game against the University of Louisiana-Monroe, Sept. 25, 2021, while playing as a member of the Troy University football program.

ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOK: Eastern Michigan's 75-yard touchdown play in the first quarter against NIU ties for the fifth-longest pass play by any Eastern Michigan team in the history of Rynearson Stadium (1969-present). The play was the longest pass from scrimmage for EMU in its home venue since the 2020 season, when former Eagles Preston Hutchinson and Bryson Cannon connected on a 79-yard strike against Central Michigan University, Nov. 27.
Eastern's best-ever pass play inside its home venue came in 2019, when Mike Glass III tossed an 80-yard dime to Mathew Sexton against Buffalo, Nov. 2.

GOMEZ BACKS UP: Sophomore placekicker Jesus Gomez continues to impress in his first season as the team's primary kicker. One week after booting a career-best 42-yard field goal at Western Michigan, Oct. 8, he bested that mark. The Puebla, Mexico native hit from 46 against Northern Illinois, Oct. 15. It is the longest three-point make for Eastern since Nov. 26, 2022, when former Eagle Chad Ryland hit from 50 against Central Michigan.

BIG KICK MITCH: Sophomore punter Mitchell Tomasek tied his career-high with a massive 62-yard boot that pinned the Northern Illinois Huskies down at their own 15 yard line, Oct. 15. In addition to that kick, the second 60-yard punt of the season for Tomasek and second punt over 50 yards on the day, he punted the ball five total times for an average of 47.8 yards per punt.  He pinned the Huskies inside their own 20-yard line twice. On those three punts, NIU only attempted to return one, which gained three total yards. Tomasek ranks first in the MAC with a 46.5 yards per punt average in 2022.

JACKSON JETS: Junior Jaylon Jackson paced the Green and White's rushing attack against NIU, accumulating a career-best tying 60 yards over the course of the game. Jackson also tacked on career-best 48 receiving yards for Eastern. Additionally, Jackson set a career standard in rushing attempts with 16, besting his previous career high of 11 set against the University of Massachusetts, Oct. 1. Jackson's 42-yard reception in the fourth quarter is his longest career offensive play, besting a 26-yard rush, also against UMass. The Burleson, Texas native went over 100 all-purpose yards for the fourth game this season, totaling 125 against the Huskies.

NO ONE LIKE JOE: Senior Joe Sparacio provided his best career performance against Northern Illinois, Oct. 15. The Naples, Fla. native recorded nine stops, his career-best and first multi-stop game. His previous best mark was eight, recorded against Eastern Kentucky, Oct. 15. Sparacio's 43 tackles (22 solo, 21 assist) are good for the second-best mark on the team, behind only fellow first-year Eagle, Chase Kline (60 tackles in 2022).

CLAWED BY CRAWFORD: One week after recording his first career fumble recovery, senior defensive lineman Jordan Crawford was a presence again, this time against NIU, Oct. 15. Crawford set a career-high in tackles against the Huskies, with seven, besting his previous high of six, set against Toledo, Nov. 18, 2020. He added in one tackle for loss as well.

COULDN'T CRACK THE RED ZONE: The Eastern Michigan offense failed to enter the red zone against Northern Illinois. It was the first game without a red zone trip for Eastern Michigan since the 2014 season, when EMU failed to get inside the UMass 20-yard line, Oct. 18.

OFFENSIVE OUTLIERS: Eastern Michigan's offense was uncharacteristically sluggish against Northern Illinois. The Eagles put up just 10 points on 226 yards, both season lows for the Green and White. The yardage total was the lowest for the team since Nov. 26, 2021, when it had the same number against CMU.
Additionally, the Eagles were held to under 30 yards rushing for the first time this season. Eastern's 10 first downs against NIU, also a season-low mark, was the lowest total for the team since it was held to three against the University of Wisconsin, Sept. 11, 2021. Additionally, its five passing first downs were also a season-low.

SERVED BY SAMSON: Senior Samson Evans is off to a great start through seven games in 2022. One of the most consistently good backs in the nation, he currently ranks 20th in the nation with 634 rushing yards. He is third in the MAC and 31st in the country with a 91 rushing yards per game average. Additionally, Evans ranks seventh in the MAC in all-purpose yards, where he has averaged 101 per game in 2022.

BEAT THE DRUM(MOND): Dylan Drummond is among the nation's most impactful wideouts. After three receptions against Northern Illinois, Oct. 15, the Cleveland, Ohio native now has 163 for his career, which ranks 28th among all active FBS players (teammate Hassan Beydoun ranks 13th with 186). Additionally, he has recorded a reception in 35 consecutive games, which is fourth-best among active FBS players.
Last season, Drummond had 64 catches for 704 yards and a team-best six receiving touchdowns - a number that ranks tied for 10th all-time in a single season at EMU. Drummond now has 12 career receiving touchdowns, tied for fifth-most in EMU history.

RED ZONE PERFECT SNAPPED: The Eastern Michigan offense entered its game at Western Michigan, Oct. 8, a perfect 19-for-19 in its red zone trips, one of just six teams who was still perfect inside the 20 this season. Unfortunately for EMU, that stretch came to an end against the Broncos. The Green and White were 6-for-7 in its attempts deep in WMU territory, with a missed field goal in the fourth quarter costing the Eagles their perfection. Despite the snapped streak, Eastern is still one of the best teams in the nation when inside its opponent's 20-yard line. EMU is 25-of-26 this season, good for a 96-percent clip. That total is first in the Mid-American Conference and eighth nationally.

EVERYONE'S CHASE(ING) HIM: Junior Chase Kline notched seven tackles against NIU, Oct. 15,  finishing second on the team in the single-game category. The Michigan State transfer leads all Eagles with 60 stops this season, 22 more than the next closest Eagle, Joe Sparacio, who has 44 stops. Kline ranks eighth in the MAC with 8.6 stops per game average this season.

MOVING THE CHAINS: EMU's offense was one of the best in the Mid-American Conference on third down a season ago. Eastern converted 42.4 percent (67-of-158) of its third down tries, which ranked 45th in the nation in the regular season.
The EMU scoring unit is off to a good start in 2022. The Eagles are currently converting at a 46.5 percent clip (40-of-86). That number sits third in the Mid-American Conference and 37th nationally. EMU's single-game low in 2022 came in its most recent game, against NIU, Oct. 15. The Eagles were just 2-for-15 (15%) against the Huskies on third down. EMU's previous season low was a 36-percent effort against Louisiana, Sept. 10.

ALL-TIME VS BALL STATE: The contest on Saturday will mark the 64th meeting between EMU and BSU on the football field. The Cardinals lead the all-time head-to-head series against the Eagles 37-24-2. The Eagles will look to snap a three-game skid against the Cardinals. The last time Eastern defeated Ball State came in 2018. Prior to the losing streak, EMU triumphed in three-straight contests against BSU, stretching from 2016-18 with two of those wins coming in Muncie, Ind.
Eastern has kept it close in the last three meetings, as BSU has outscored EMU by just 20 points (105-85). Meanwhile, in the Eagles' three-game win streak over the Cardinals, EMU outscored Ball State 146-75 (2016-18).

LAST TIME VS THE CARDINALS: The last time the two programs met BSU defeated EMU, 38-31, inside Rynearson Stadium, Oct. 16, 2021. Wideout Dylan Drummond finished with 105 receiving yards and a touchdown while Samson Evans added 22 yards and one touchdown on the ground, as well as 30 receiving yards.
Eastern Michigan fell to Ball State by the same score in the last meeting in Muncie, Ind., Nov. 11, 2020. Despite the loss, Eastern put together an incredible offensive performance, as the Eagles racked up 477 yards of offense in the setback.

CARDINAL TURNED EAGLE: EMU Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee began his career in athletics at Ball State. He served as a graduate assistant in BSU's ticketing office for two years (1997-99). Wetherbee earned his bachelor's degree from Ball State in sports administration in 1997.
Furthermore, EMU volleyball Head Coach Darcy Dorton hails from Muncie, Ind. where she was a student at Delta High School. Additionally, Ball State University's Associate Director of Athletic Communications Brad Caudill spent two seasons in Ypsilanti. Caudill worked under long-time EMU Sports Information Director Jim Streeter as a graduate assistant for Eastern Michigan's media relations office.

ON THE HORIZON: The Eagles will conclude the month of October with a home meeting against the University of Toledo, Oct. 29. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. inside "The Factory" at Rynearson Stadium.
