EMU heads to second-consecutive national meet
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University cross country program will travel to University Park, Pa., for the Penn State National, hosted by Penn State University. The meet will be held at the PSU Cross Country Course.
EMU's women harriers will open the day at 10:45 a.m. with the 6k race. Eastern will join a strong field, headlined by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) No. 15 team Syracuse University, alongside national vote-receiving squads Villanova University and West Virginia University.
The men's team will follow with an 11:30 a.m. start time in their five mile race. Syracuse is also pacing the field in USTFCCCA rankings in the men's division, coming in at ninth in the nation.
This will be the second 6k race for the Eagle women in the 2022 season, with the first coming at Bowling Green State University's Mel Brodt Open, Sept. 16. There, EMU was paced by senior Esme Davies (Lake District, England-Queen Elizabeth Grammar School), who crossed the finish line in fifth place in 22:06.2. Davies was followed by a top-10 finish from junior Faith Rono (Eldoret, Kenya-Middle Tennessee State), who took 10th in 22:40.0.
Eastern's men's team has not run a 5 mile race yet, but enjoyed a strong outing two weeks ago at the Live in Lou Cross Country Classic, hosted by the University of Louisville, Oct. 1. Senior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) finished in 12th place with a time of 23:44.3, with sophomore Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College) hot on his heels, placing a spot behind Magnusson in 23:53.0. Magnusson and Gualter's performances propelled the Eagles to a fifth place team finish in the field of 31 teams, ahead of USTFCCCA national vote-receiving University of Tennessee.
