Two Eagles Earn MAC Athlete of the Week Awards

Distance runner Baldvin Magnusson and thrower Taige Bryant earn league honors
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University track & field program saw two competitors earn Mid-American Conference Athlete of the Week honors in junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) and graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial), the league office announced today, Jan. 19.
Magnusson was dubbed Men's MAC Track Athlete of the Week for the fifth time in his career and second this season, after his strong performances in the 800m, mile, and 3000m races at the Akron Quad Meet, Jan. 14. The junior recorded personal-bests in the 800 (2nd - 1:52.79) and mile (1st - 4:04.15), while winning in the 3000 with a time of 8:09.62. Currently, the harrier ranks first in the conference in the mile, 3000, and 5000, and third in the 800.
Bryant garnered the weekly honor for the third time in the 2021-22 season and fifth in his career. The veteran thrower produced another outstanding showing in the weight throw, besting his school-record toss of 22.56m with a launch of 22.85m at the Akron Quad Meet, Jan. 14. His 22.85m throw currently ranks second in the nation and first in the Mid-American Conference. Additionally, excluding other Eastern Michigan throwers, 22.85m is over three meters further than the next-best MAC thrower (Caleb Nickens - 19.53m). For perspective, at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships, Bryant took eleventh with a toss of 21.13m. Meanwhile, 22.85m would have earned him third in the competition.
The Eagles are back in the Mitten State for the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 22. The University of Michigan-based meet is scheduled for 11 a.m. inside the U-M Indoor Track Building.
