Four Eagles swept league honors
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University track & field program saw four Eagles earn Mid-American Conference Athlete of the Week honors, today, Jan. 13, in sophomores Almighty Williamson (Baltimore, Md.-Digital Harbor (Barton County C.C.)) and Kilani Harvey (Orlando, Fla.-Jones (Highland C.C.)), junior Nina Ward (Fairfield, Ohio-Fairfield), and graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial).
Williamson picks up the award for the first time after winning two events at the Wolverine Invitational, Jan. 8. Inside the U-M Indoor Track Building, the sophomore earned wins in the 60m hurdles and 60m dash with times of 8.14 and 6.93, respectively. The Baltimore native's 60H time leads the MAC while his 60 time is second.
Also on the track, classmate Harvey recorded a personal-best 60 time of 7.58 for second last weekend. Her 7.58 clip currently ranks first in the Mid-American Conference. This marks the first time the Orlando, Fla. native has earned a league weekly honor.
In the field, Ward took home the high jump crown with a personal-best leap of 1.71m at the Wolverine Invitational. Her 1.71m clearance is tied for first in the Mid-American Conference. Additionally, she was named the MAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week for the first time.
Bryant produced a strong showing in the weight throw at the University of Michigan. The graduate student recorded a toss of 22.28m, good for second overall and the best throw of any collegiate student-athlete in the competition. The two-time All-American currently owns the best weight throw mark in the country at 22.56m. Only one other Division I weight thrower boasts a mark higher than 22.28m.
Following Friday's meet, the Eagles will return to the Mitten State for the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 22. The University of Michigan-based meet is scheduled for 11 a.m. inside the U-M Indoor Track Building.
