Eastern Gears Up For Akron Quad Meet

The Eagles are set to compete at Akron, Jan. 14
AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University track & field program is ready for another challenge this week as it travels to Akron, Ohio for the Akron Quad Meet, Jan. 14. The start time inside the Stile Athletics Field House is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Most recently, Eastern Michigan participated at the University of Michigan's Wolverine Invitational, Jan. 8. There, the Eagles captured 10 event victories, highlighted by two wins from sophomore Almighty Williamson (Baltimore, Md.-Digital Harbor (Barton C.C.)). Williamson recorded first-place finishes in both the 60m dash (6.93) and 60m hurdles (8.13).
For the Zips, both the men's and women's teams finished second in the Mid-American Conference last year. This season, Akron has competed in one meet thus far, hosting the Eighth Annual Akron Pole Vault Convention, Jan. 8.
Last year at the Akron Quad Meet, the Eagles won 11 total events, highlighted by then-junior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) setting previous school-record weight throw of 22.28m.
Currently, the men's team has six student-athletes ranked in the top-20 in the country in their respective events: graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) (1st - Weight Throw), Stephenson (3rd - Weight Throw), seniord Derek Jones (Erie, Pa.-Cathedral Preparatory) (10th - 800m) and Chukwusom Enekwechi (Valley Stream, N.Y.-Jamaica Gateway to the Sciences (Monroe College)) (15th - Shot Put), junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) (19th - 5000m), and freshman Linus Vennemann (Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, Germany-Gymnasium "In der Wüste") (20th - 3000m)
Meanwhile, the women's team owns four top-20 marks: junior Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) (13th - 400m), freshman Chloie Musta (Mesick, Mich.-Cadillac) (13th - 800m), the quartet of juniors Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Ann Arbor Pioneer), Edwards, Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start), and Chevonne Wheeler (Redford, Mich.-Divine Child) (20th - 4x400), and senior Ariel Floyd (Mount Clemens, Mich.-Chippewa Valley (Olivet)) (T-20th - Weight Throw).
Following Friday's meet, the Eagles will return to the Mitten State for the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 22. The University of Michigan-based meet is scheduled for 11 a.m. inside the U-M Indoor Track Building.
