YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University Head Rowing Coach Kemp Savage announced the addition of Annie Cantu to his coaching staff today, Sept. 9. Cantu, a Michigan State University graduate, will work primarily with the novice squad as well as assist with talent transfer recruiting, and alumni and parent outreach.
"We are really excited to add a dynamic young coach like Annie to the staff," Savage said. "Her rowing experience in the Big Ten as well as her coaching experience with Juniors brings a lot of new ideas to the program."
Prior to her arrival in Ypsilanti, Cantu spent a year stint as an assistant coach for the Dallas Rowing Club. She coached the technical skill of rowing to the DRC Junior Rowing team. While at DRC, Cantu also spent time at Real Freedom Enterprises, where she worked in digital recruiting.
"I am beyond grateful and extremely excited for the opportunity to coach with Eastern Michigan University Women's Rowing Program," Cantu said. "As a coach I strive to assist in the development of my athletes through communication, accountability, and the application of skills and techniques. My goal at Eastern is to provide my athletes the resources and skills to not only make them the most successful rowers and team they can be, but to allow them to grow into the best version of themselves on and off the water."
Cantu was a four-year letterwinner at Michigan State University, where she rowed on the First Varsity Eight team her last three seasons. The Plano, Texas native earned academic honors at the Spartan Excellence Gala in 2018.
Cantu started rowing in eighth grade when she joined the Dallas Rowing Club. She spent five years with the Juniors program before heading to Michigan State.
She graduated from MSU in May 2020 with a bachelor's degree in psychology with minors in human behavior and social sciences.
