YORKTOWN, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team climbed to third-place among 16 teams the Cardinal Classic hosted by Ball State Monday, Sept. 20, posting a second round 299 after shooting 312 in the morning round. Head Coach Stephanie Jennings' team got off to a slow start, but rebounded as the day wore on to climb seven spots in the second round.
Akron and Purdue Fort Wayne are tied atop the leaderboard at 609 and EMU is third at 611. Ball State's Liz Kim is the top individual at one-under 143 and Oakland's Amalia Shahzan is second at 144.
The final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The Eagles will start on holes one, two, and three and be paired with the Mastodons and the Zips.
How It Happened
After a year away, junior Natai Apichonlati (Bangkok, Thailand-The Regent's International School) fired back-to-back rounds of 75 for a six-over 150 in a tie for seventh. Sophomore Olivia Loberg (Bend, Ore.-Summit) is one shot back in 10th after posting rounds of 76 and 75 for a 151.
Freshmen Anna Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland) and Kyleigh Dull (Fremont, Ohio-Lakota) are tied for 27th at 155, while classmate Sophia Wygonik (Westland, Mich.-Livonia Franklin) added a 160 (83-77) in a tie for 48th. Making her collegiate debut, freshman Alyssa DiMarcantonio (Maple, Ontario-Tommy Douglas Secondary School) notched rounds of 77 and 78 for a 155 to reside in 27th-place.
As a team, Eastern was tops in total pars with 08, but struggled to score, making just 14 birdies on the day.
