YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –  Grab your green and white, put on your hard hat, and paint your face loud and proud, because college football is back in Ypsilanti! The 2021 Eastern Michigan University football season is set to begin Friday, Sept. 3, when EMU welcomes Saint Francis University to town for a 7 p.m. matchup at The Factory inside Rynearson Stadium.
The contest will be broadcast on ESPN3, where Jason Ross Jr. (play-by-play) and Marcus Ray (analyst) will have the call. The game will also be aired on WEMU (89.1 FM) with veteran broadcasters Tom Helmer and Rob Rubick calling the action from the press box.

COMMUNIVERSITE NIGHT: This season, in addition to all of the fun and excitement around The Factory that fans have come to expect on the field and around the stadium under Head Coach Chris Creighton, EMU Athletics is excited to announce an array of new festivities taking place this season for the first time. EMU will celebrate CommUniversitE Night against Saint Francis. Presented by EMU's proud corporate partner, DTE Energy, CommUniversitE Night is a family-centric event that will showcase and celebrate the people who make our university and community a special place to live, work, and learn.
Prior to kickoff, fans can enjoy a free petting zoo and carnival games, interact with EMU student-athletes and coaches, and pick up coupons from local business partners. Additionally, as a thank you to educators for their dedication to students of all ages, EMU Athletics is offering all local teachers and staff up to four complimentary tickets to the home opener. Interested parties should contact the EMU Office of Athletic Marketing.

130 YEARS OF FOOTBALL: This is the 130th year for the EMU football team. The first year of intercollegiate football in Ypsilanti was 1891, when the team, then known as the Michigan Normal College Normalites, posted an 0-2 record. EMU has fielded a team every year since 1891 with one exception, when the 1944 season was canceled because of World War II.

LUCK OF THE DRAW: Friday's game will mark the sixth time in eight years under Head Coach Chris Creighton that his team has opened its season in Ypsilanti. Starting the year in front of a home crowd has worked well for the Eagles in that span, as the team is 4-1 in season-debuting home games since 2014.
Overall, Creighton-led EMU teams are 5-2 in its season openers, with the two losses coming to Old Dominion in 2015 and Kent State in 2020. Those two contests were lost by a combined eight points.

KICKING OFF THE SEASON AT HOME: EMU is 77-46-5 (.621) all-time in its home opener. Furthermore, the Eagles are 43-17-1 (.713) when opening the season at home.  Friday's game marks the 11th time in the last 14 years that the Eagles have opened the season at home in Rynearson Stadium.

OPENING AT RYNEARSON: EMU's game against Saint Francis, Sept. 3, will mark the 53rd season for the team inside Rynearson Stadium. EMU has played well in home lid-lifters in its previous 52 attempts, where it has compiled a 29-23 record. EMU's best streak saw it win six home-openers in-a-row between 1985-90.

IN SEASON-OPENERS: Sept. 3 will mark the 130th season of EMU football. In its previous 129 opening games, Eastern has mustered a record of 60-61-8. The team has gone on season-opening win streaks of five games-or-better on four different occasions, most recently between the years of 1985-89 when it hit the mark under Jim Harkema. Chris Creighton's teams won four-straight between 2016-19.
Perhaps the most interesting portion of the record is the eight ties, the last of which came via a 14-all stalemate with North Dakota State to open the 1970 season. EMU opened three consecutive seasons with a tie between the years of 1939-41.

ALL-TIME VS SAINT FRANCIS: This marks the first time the Eagles and Red Flash have met on the gridiron. Eastern will be looking for its second win against a Northeast Conference team,  as EMU previously downed Central Connecticut State, 34-29, in dramatic fashion during the 2019 season. Saint Francis will be playing a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) school for the first time in program history.
The two programs will square off again during the 2024 season, when the Red Flash return to The Factory, Sept. 24.

FLYING HIGH OVER THE FCS: Eastern holds a 70-55-10 (55.5%) record when playing Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams in regular season match ups. EMU has won it last five meetings against FCS opponents dating back to the 2013 season, winning by an average of 19 ppg (EMU 42.2, OPP 23.2).

LAST TIME VERSUS THE NEC: Mathew Sexton blocked a punt and returned it 30 yards to score the winning touchdown with 10 seconds left as Eastern Michigan beat Central Connecticut 34-29, Sept. 21, 2019. Mike Glass III passed for 279 yards and four touchdowns for the Eagles. A lightning strike in the area delayed the game for 47 minutes after Glass threw his fourth TD pass to make it 28-15 early in the fourth quarter.
When play resumed, the Blue Devils drove 75 yards to cut the deficit to six on Keonte Lucas' 1-yard run. Central Connecticut then took a 29-28 lead with 2:05 to go on Aaron Winchester's 68-yard TD pass to Tyshaun James.
The Blue Devils retook possession when Tre Jones intercepted Glass' pass with 1:23 left, but the Eastern Michigan defense forced a three-and-out to set up Sexton's big play.

SCOUTING SAINT FRANCIS: Saint Francis, a member of the NCAA Division I's Northeast Conference, will match up with EMU for the first time in the respective program's histories on Sept. 3. The game will also be the first for SFU since it closed the 2019 season with a 35-21 win over Delaware State, Nov. 23. The Red Flash did not play a 2020 campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A consistent program since the arrival of former NFL All-Pro offensive lineman and Head Coach Chris Villarrial in 2009, SFU has racked up 46 wins in the last 11 seasons, which makes Villarrial the all-time winningest coach for SFU.
Saint Francis went 6-6 in 2019, scoring 30-or-more points in five of the last six games and posting the top passing attack in the NEC. Defensively, the Red Flash ranked 3rd in the NEC in scoring defense and total defense and 13th in all of FCS in total defense. Saint Francis has had a top three defense in the NEC in terms of scoring and total defense every season dating back to 2015.
Villarrial is a two-time NEC Coach of the Year, winning the award in 2015 and 2016, as well as the Metropolitan New York Football Writers' Bob Ford Coach of the Year in 2015 and the ECAC Coach of the Year in 2016.
He led the Red Flash to its first ever NEC Title and FCS Playoffs berth in 2016 with a 7-5 overall record and 5-1 mark in the NEC. The 2016 season also included Saint Francis' first ever appearance in a Top 25 poll, when it was ranked 25th in the STATS FCS Media Poll on November 14.  SFU met Villanova in the first round of the FCS Playoffs, but fell 31-21.

STRAIGHT FROM THE BEAR: The EMU Office of Athletic Media Relations is no stranger to noting EMU's close-game tendencies, but ESPN's Chris Fallica, known as "The Bear" on the network's flagship pregame show, College Gameday, took to Twitter to discuss it as well.
According to Fallica, 29 of EMU's last 33 MAC games and 42 of its last 48 games overall have either been a win or a one possession loss.

STABILITY IS THE NAME OF THE GAME: In his eighth season in Ypsilanti, EMU Head Coach Chris Creighton is now the 21st longest-tenured Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) head coach. He is the second-longest tenured head coach in the conference, falling just three days short of Miami's Chuck Martin.

CREIGHTON CLIMBING: With two more wins in the 2020 campaign, EMU Head Coach Chris Creighton continued to climb the EMU all-time wins ladder. Currently the fifth-winningest coach in program history, Creighton is just 11 games away from tying Jim Harkema (41 wins) for fourth-best all-time at Eastern. The San Francisco native is the only coach in EMU history to take a team to three postseason bowl games.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS CHRIS CREIGHTON?: In his head coaching career, Chris Creighton has racked up the frequent flyer miles, coaching games in seven different countries. Creighton added the Bahamas to that list in 2016 when he led the Eagles to the Bahamas Bowl after it already consisted of the United States, Sweden, Austria, Panama, Tanzania, and Germany.

THE NOT-SO UNDERDOGS: Head Coach Chris Creighton has directed his EMU teams to three "Power Five" wins during his tenure in Ypsilanti (Rutgers – 2017, Purdue – 2018, Illinois – 2019). Creighton is the only MAC coach to have multiple "Power 5" wins.

THE CREIGHTON DIFFERENCE: Head Coach Chris Creighton has won nearly 50 percent (27-of-57) of his games since the start of the 2016 season. In the three seasons prior to his arrival in Ypsilanti, the Eagles were victorious in just 28 percent (10-of-36) of their games.

CONSISTENT COACHING: When Chris Creighton steps onto the "EMU gray," field Sept. 3, to lead the Eagles against Saint Francis, he will officially begin his eighth year at the helm of the program. Nine coaches, five head and four interim, have come-and-gone at EMU since the last time a head-man has coached eight years (Jim Harkerma, 1983-92) at Eastern. Harkema, who coached nine full seasons for the Green and White, resides one spot ahead of Creighton as the fourth-winningest coach in program history.

THE NEAL NEATHERY EFFECT: Prior to EMU Associate Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator Neal Neathery's arrival in 2016, the Eagles recorded four-or-more sacks in a game just eight times in the 10 previous seasons. Under his direction, Eastern has accomplished the feat 12 times.

CLOSED 2020 ON A HIGH NOTE: Eastern's win over Northern Illinois, Dec. 12, 2020, bumped EMU's record in regular-season finales to 7-13 over its last 20 seasons. The win also pushed Chris Creighton to 4-3 in such games. Before its victory over NIU, EMU's most recent win in a season-ending game came in 2018, when it defeated Kent State, 28-20, on the road, Nov. 23, 2018.

WREAKING HAVOC IN THE RED ZONE: EMU was incredibly effective in the red zone on both sides of the ball in 2020. Offensively, EMU ranked No. 1 in the nation with a 100 percent red zone scoring clip (tied with Washington State). The Eagles produced points in 28-of-28 trips inside the opponent's 20-yard line, a 22.5 percent improvement over  the 2019 season's efficiency. In total, 21 of EMU's red zone trips have resulted in touchdowns. Additionally, the team averaged 4.66 trips to the red zone per game in 2020, a considerable improvement from EMU's 2019 numbers (3.8 trips per game).
Defensively, the Eagles ranked seventh nationally in the red zone. EMU's opponents left the red zone scoreless eight times in 28 attempts this season, making EMU the best red zone defense in the MAC.

FOUR STAR: With one of the league's best returning quarterbacks, Preston Hutchinson, already in the locker room, eighth-year Head Coach and second year offensive play caller Chris Creighton added even more talent during the offseason.
Ben Bryant, a quarterback who was a four-star prospect by ESPN.com and the No. 6 rated player coming out of Illinois following his illustrious prep career, will don the Green and White following a stint at the University of Cincinnati. In joining the squad, Bryant joins former quarterback Brogan Roback (2013-17) as just the second four-star recruit to enroll at EMU in program history.

EMU ON THE NATIONAL LEADERBOARDS IN 2020: EMU notched itself onto the national and conference leaderboards in a slew of individual and team-based categories in 2020. Senior linebacker Terry Myrick was one of the nation's best tacklers, ranking fourth in the MAC and 11th in the NCAA in tackles per game (11.2), while as a team, EMU was the best-of-the-best in red zone offense (28-for-28), and red zone defense (No. 7 nationally).

UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO RETURN: Although EMU did not get to play its planned 12-game regular season in 2020, the NCAA did grant a one-time eligibility waiver that allows players to return in 2021 without the loss of eligibility. EMU is ready to reap the benefits of the decision, as just six players departed the program following the 2020 campaign. A total of 53 letterwinners have returned in 2021, including a projected 23 starters.

CREATING A CULTURE: If the EMU Department of Athletics' promotion of the football team isn't enough to convince you of the culture change that has happened at EMU since Chris Creighton's arrival, then take the word of the "worldwide leader in sports," ESPN. Recently, in a story that ranked the stability of all 130 FBS programs, EMU was ranked No. 9. Overall, EMU was considered one of 17 programs to have "extreme stability" and the only program inside the state of Michigan to make the "extreme stability" list.
The Eagles earned a total stability value of 38.6 out of 50 possible points, as No. 1 Wyoming earned 40.6 points. EMU earned 18.0 out of 20 points possible for coaching stability, 15.2 out of 20 points possible for roster stability and 5.3 out of 10.0 points possible for performance stability.
The pollster, ESPN's Bill Connelly, said "Seven years ago, Chris Creighton took over what was basically a smoking crater of a football program. No history, no recent success. The Eagles haven't broken through to a division or conference title yet, but they went to three bowls in four years from 2016-19, and the two-deep is loaded with experience. What a turnaround this has been."

FIFTY YEARS OF PIONEERING: While Chris Creighton has made postseason play the standard in recent years at EMU, it was the 1971 squad that first ushered in postseason play for the Green and White, fifty seasons ago. That team finished undefeated in the regular season (7-0-2), and went on to play against Louisiana Tech in the Pioneer Bowl. The then-Hurons fell in that game, 14-3.

ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN: Senior center Mike Van Hoeven was named Second Team CoSIDA Academic All-America on Monday, July 12, 2021, making him just the third football player in Eastern Michigan University history to be an Academic All-American. The previous Academic All-American were Corey Annett, grabbing second team honors in 2001 and Cy Maughmer adding second team accolades in 2013. Van Hoeven – who was also CoSIDA Academic All-District in 2018 and 2019 – is the first Eastern Michigan football student-athlete to be recognized three times in a career.
Van Hoeven started all six games for the Green and White as the team's center in 2020. He helped spur an EMU rushing attack that saw seven different Eagles record multiple attempts on the ground en route to 776 total yards and 11 of EMU's 23 offensive touchdowns in 2020. Additionally, he helped to protect quarterback Preston Hutchinson, who racked up better than 1,600 yards through the air in just six games.

WHO TO LOOK FOR – OFFENSE: The EMU offense will bolster plenty of returning production in 2021. Up front, the offensive line returns a combined 16 seasons of letterwinning experience. Senior Mike Van Hoeven will anchor the unit as the starting center.
In the passing game, junior wide out Hassan Beydoun is back. A Preseason All-MAC selection in both Phil Steele's College Football Preview and Athlon Sport's preseason list, Beydoun led all EMU pass catchers with an 8.0 yards per catch average in 2020. That number is also a program record for a single season. Overall, he was fifth in the MAC and 20th in the nation in receiving yards per game with 101.6. Additionally, Beydoun caught at least seven passes in every game last season.
At quarterback, junior Preston Hutchinson returns after a breakout season in 2020. A Maxwell Award Watch List member and Preseason All-MAC candidate in both publications previously listed, Hutchinson set new career-highs in nearly every statistical category last season. He threw for 1,662 yards on 126-of-198 pass attempts, the 22nd most single-season passing yards by a QB in program history. Additionally, he recorded two games with 300+ passing yards, and threw for 12 touchdowns, including a career-best four scores versus Toledo, Nov. 18. On the ground, he added a career-best 87 rushing attempts for 206 yards and eight touchdowns. Elsewhere, four-star transfer Ben Bryant has joined the team after a stint with Cincinnati. He was part of a Bearcats roster that claimed the American Athletic Conference Championship and earned a spot in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in 2020.
A slew of ball carriers will likely see time for the Green and White. Be on the lookout for returners Darius Boone Jr. and Samson Evans, as well as newcomer Jawon Hamilton, who transferred from James Madison University.

WHO TO LOOK FOR – DEFENSE: The defense boasts plenty of returning production in 2021. The team's leading linebacker, senior Terry Myrick collected Second Team All-MAC honors in 2020 after recording a team-best 67 tackles in 2020. He also led the team with 5.5 tackles-for-loss and two fumble recoveries. His fumble recovery numbers were the best in the MAC and ranked ninth nationally.
On the defensive line, returning Second Team All-MAC honoree Turan Rush will anchor the pass rushing attack for the Green and White. Rush finished sixth in the MAC and 32nd in the FBS in sacks at 0.75 per game in 2020. He had a season-best two sacks and six tackles against MAC West Division champion Ball State, Nov. 11.
According to Assistant Head Coach Jay Nunez, fans and media should also expect to see major contributions from returning lineman Jose Ramirez, Alex Merritt, and Jordan Crawford.
The secondary returns EMU's lone First Team All-MAC selection from 2020 in safety Alvinoski LaFleur. LaFleur emerged as the team's starting safety in 2020 and played all six games for the Eagles. He recorded multiple tackles in each contest, with his best performance coming in the form of an 11-stop day, a career-high, versus Central Michigan, Nov. 27. Returners Kempton Shine, Blake Bogan, and Russell Vaden IV will also look to make an impact, along with newcomer Jarrett Paul, a Rutgers transfer.

WHO TO LOOK FOR – SPECIAL TEAMS: Arguably the team's most refined unit, the EMU special teams units are led by a pair of program record holders. Senior punter Jake Julien, who is tied for first in program history with a 43.4 career punting average is back for the Green and White in 2021. He is the only player in program history with two 70+ yard punts, and has downed an opponent inside the 20-yard line 51 times in his career. Julien has collected a slew of preseason honors in 2021, including All-American honors in Phil Steele's College Football Preview, as well as being named to the watch list for the Ray Guy Award, given annually to the nation's best punter.
Junior Chad Ryland also returns as the team's place kicker in 2021. Already third in all-time PAT makes (94) and fourth in PAT's attempted (98) for EMU, Ryland needs just 95 points to surpass Andrew Wellock (2003-06) for the most points in program history (299). Ryland currently ranks third all-time with 37 made field goals. He was selected as a Preseason All-MAC Selection in both Phil Steele's College Football Preview and Athlon Sport's preseason list.
In the return game, fans and media can expect to see veterans Dylan Drummond and Hassan Beydoun as the primary candidates.

CONSECUTIVE FIELD GOALS MADE: Junior kicker Chad Ryland currently sits sixth in the FBS with nine consecutive field goals made dating back to Nov. 27, 2020, versus Central Michigan.  The Lebanon, Pa. product went 3-for-3 versus the Chippewas and followed it up with a 4-of-4 day against Western Michigan, Dec. 5. He closed the 2020 season with a 2-for-2 effort against NIU, Dec. 12.

GETTING IT DONE IN THE CLASSROOM: During the 2020-21 academic calendar, Eastern Michigan led the MAC in mean grade point average (GPA) for the third time in the last seven years. Eastern notched an impressive 3.158 GPA in 2020 when combining the fall and winter terms. The next closest MAC school recorded a 3.148. In recent years, the Green and White have taken home the league's football academic crown in 2014-15, 2015-16, and now in 2020-21.
A MAC-leading 106 EMU football student-athletes have landed on the league's Academic All-MAC teams since 2014 when Creighton arrived. EMU's number is two ahead of Western Michigan (104) and four ahead of Ball State (102) as the only conference institutions to surpass the century mark over that span.

2021 CAPTAINS: Providing leadership for this year's squad are returning captains Thomas Odukoya and Turan Rush. Odukoya and Rush, both captains for the 2020 season as well, are the first pair of former transfers to wear the "C," under Chris Creighton. Odukoya, an Almere, Netherlands native, began his career at Garden City Community College. Rush, of Charleston West Side, W. Va., started at Antelope Valley College.

NEW COACHING ADDITIONS: EMU added a pair of new full-time coaches in its most recent offseason.
Taking over the wide receiver's room is RJ Fleming, who comes to Ypsilanti after spending the past two years at Liberty University. After a successful collegiate career, Fleming has spent the past six seasons climbing the coaching ranks with stops at the NAIA, NCAA Division II, and Football Bowl Subdivision ranks. Before arriving in Lynchburg, Va., Fleming spent time as an offensive graduate assistant working with the wide receivers at Big 12 Conference member TCU (2016-18).  During his tenure with Horned Frogs, TCU compiled 23 victories, four top-25 upsets, and three bowl appearances (2016 AutoZone Liberty Bowl, 2017 Valero Alamo Bowl, 2018 Cheez-It Bowl). Fleming played collegiately at Arkansas State University from 2010-13.  He appeared in 39 career games, picking up 46 receptions for 421 yards to go along with nine kickoff returns with an average of 33.8 yards. ASU appeared in both the 2012 and 2013 GoDaddy.com Bowls, with Fleming earning a start in the 2012 edition of the game.
The offensive line will now be coached by seasoned veteran Sean Coughlin, who came to Ypsilanti after spending the past two years at Arkansas State University. He will also serve as EMU's Co-Offensive Run Game Coordinator. Coughlin owns 20 years of coaching experience in the college ranks, having coached the offensive line at both the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) ranks. Coughlin arrived in Jonesboro, Ark. after spending the previous 13 seasons at Missouri State. He was elevated to associate head coach for the 2018 campaign and served as the Bears' co-offensive coordinator since 2016. The 2001 Drake University graduate was a standout offensive lineman from his playing days. A three-time All-Pioneer Conference offensive guard for the Bulldogs, he was a first-team all-conference choice from 1998-2000 and earned All-America honors from Football Gazette his final two seasons. He was team captain in 2000. Coughlin coached three seasons (2001-03) at his alma mater, working with the offensive line and tight ends for the Bulldogs while mentoring two all-conference first team linemen. He joined the Iowa State offensive staff in 2004 and spent two seasons there while pursuing his master's in higher education (2006).

CFL SUCCESS SUSTAINED: Just weeks after former Eastern Michigan football player Steven Nielsen was taken No. 2 overall in the Canadian Football League's (CFL) Global Draft, April 15, 2021, another Eagle, senior punter Jake Julien was selected in the league's annual draft.
Julien, EMU's current starting punter, was drafted No. 31 overall by the Ottawa RedBlacks, May 4 .
Since 1973, Eastern Michigan has had 20 players taken in the CFL Draft, including eight first round selections.

PRESEASON POLLING: EMU was picked to finish fifth in the Mid-American Conference West Division in the league's annual preseason media poll. The Eagles received 44 points, finishing ahead of Northern Illinois (29). Ball State was selected to repeat as West Division champions with 114 total points, followed by Toledo (104), Western Michigan (103), Central Michigan (68), then EMU. In the East Division, Kent State was selected first with 112 total points ahead of Ohio with 96 total points. Miami finished third with 94 points, followed by defending East Division Champion Buffalo with 93 points, then Akron (39) and Bowling Green (28). Six teams received votes to win the annual Rocket Mortgage MAC Football Championship Game between the winners of the West and East Divisions. The Cardinals garnered seven votes, while Toledo (5), Kent State (4), Western Michigan (3), Buffalo (2), and Miami (1) were each featured on ballots.

TEAM THEME: This year's team theme is "We Different." The team spent the winter and summer using the mantra "Be Different," a phrase designed to inspire players and coaches to work diligently at working harder than everyone else while resisting to fall into the many status quos of life. Now, with the season underway, the "Be," has been transitioned to "We," meaning that it is now time for the team to prove that their sacrifices to "Be  Different," have come to fruition.

2021 NCAA RULE CHANGES: When the college football season returns this fall, a few new rule changes will be coming with it. Starting in 2021, teams will be required to run a two-point conversion play after a touchdown in the second overtime period. Previously, this was only required after a game reached the third overtime period.
After a touchdown during the first overtime, teams can still choose between kicking the extra point or attempting a 2-point conversion. The new rule also states if the contest does reach a third overtime, instead of teams starting another drive at the opponent's 25-yard line, they will alternate running 2-point plays. Before the change, running 2-point plays did not start until the fifth overtime.      The NCAA said this change is being made to bring the game to a quicker conclusion and limit the number of plays from scrimmage.
Also starting this upcoming season, the team area will be permanently extended to the 20-yard lines. In previous years, it reached the 25-yard lines before it was expanded to the 15-yard lines in 2020 to increase space due to the pandemic.
When it comes to unsportsmanlike tactics, video board and lighting system operators are now included as "personnel who may not create any distraction that obstructs play." There will be more emphasis on officials penalizing any taunting actions directed at the opponent to avoid unnecessary confrontations. Coaches will also receive an automatic unsportsmanlike foul if they leave the team area and enter the field of play to debate a call made by the officials.
Under the feigning injuries category, the Football Rules Committee "proposal to provide a framework to allow a school or conference to request a postgame video review about questionable actions through the NCAA secretary-rules editor/national coordinator of officials" was supported by the panel.

ON THE HORIZON: Eastern Michigan hits the road for the first-time with a trip to Madison, Wis. to battle No. 12/15 Wisconsin at Camp Randall Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on FS1.
It will be the fourth all-time meeting between the two programs and the first since the 1996 season. UW won the last meeting 24-3 (Sept. 7, 1996), despite Hall of Fame quarterbacks Charlie Batch and Walt Church combining for 258 yards through the air.
