TOKYO, Japan (EMUEagles.com) –
At long last, after years of waiting and tireless training, former Eastern Michigan University standout Donald Scott made his Olympic debut in the triple jump. Representing the United States, the Apopka, Fla. native finished the qualifying round of the men's triple jump by placing sixth overall with a leap of 17.01m.

"Donald had a great day," said Associate Head Coach Sterling Roberts. "He was calm, focused, and ready, and he went out there and competed from jump #1, which is always our goal. We're on to finals, which is, of course, the most important thing. His Olympic journey continues!"

Scott recorded his best leap of the day on his first attempt, reaching 17.01m. He followed this up with a solid jump of 16.43m on his second attempt, and chose to pass on his final try. His 17.01m was good enough to finish fourth in his group and sixth in the overall standings to put him through to the finals. Additionally, he was the top American in the event, besting teammate Will Claye who had the highest mark at the U.S. trials. Pichardo Pedro Pablo of Portugal paced the field, reaching a distance of 17.71m.

The former eight-time Mid-American Conference Champion owns a career-high bound of 17.74m which he set in 2019. This year, his best came at the Chula Vista Field Festival where he registered a 17.22m jump. Up next for Scott, he moves on to the final round of the competition which takes place Wednesday, Aug. 4, at 10 p.m. ET.
