The graduate student is one of 19 student-athletes honored by the league office

RICHMOND, Va. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University rower Haley Dutton (West Salem, Wis.-West Salem) was named a Colonial Athletic Association Leadership & Sport Excellence Award recipient, the league office announced today, June 22. Dutton is one of 19 student-athletes from the CAA sponsored sports to be honored.

"Since day one on the team, Haley was the type of leader every coach wants," Head Coach Kemp Savage said. "Someone who will give up a little personal success to make sure her teammates succeed. She has been a great athlete and an even greater teammate. We will all miss her as she moves to her next challenge."

The award mirrors the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award, which is presented in men's and women's basketball, and the Chuck Boone Leadership Award, which is presented in football. One student-athlete was chosen from each of the 19 other sports sponsored by the CAA for embodying the highest standards of leadership, integrity, teamwork and sportsmanship in his or her academic and athletic achievements.

Dutton, a five-year letterwinner at EMU, is a three-time CRCA National Scholar-Athlete honoree. The graduate student led the 1V8+ squad to a program-best third-place finish at the CAA Championship in 2019. In addition, Dutton was part of the 1V8+ boat program-best fifth-place finish at the Head of the Charles and a sixth-place finish at the Head of the Hooch in 2019.

The West Salem, Wis. native has won the EMU Rowing Pioneer Award three-straight seasons. The award is given to a member of the team that has set new standards of excellence and has taken EMU rowing to a new place. Furthermore, Dutton was a member of the 1V4+ boat that bested Michigan State at the Head of the Grand in 2019, which was the first win over a Big Ten opponent since 2005.

Dutton's leadership has taken Eastern Michigan to new heights. The three-year Student Athlete Advisory Committee member organizes volunteer opportunities for the rowing team when the Eagles are on the road. Most recently, the graduate student organized a river clean-up with the University of Alabama and a team project at Jerimiah's Garden in Alabama, where the team helped weed and prepare the community garden for planting.

Dutton is a prosthetics graduate student and holds a 3.87 GPA.

After wrapping up an abbreviated season, the Eagles look forward to having a full season for the 2021-22 academic year.  For more information on Eastern Michigan rowing, visit EMUEagles.com or follow the team's official Twitter at Twitter.com/EMURowing, on Facebook at Facebook.com/emurowing, and on Instagram at Instagram.com/emurowing.
