Twelve Eagles Named CRCA National Scholar-Athletes

792 Division I female student-athletes recognized for their success in the classroom and on the water
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Twelve members of the Eastern Michigan University rowing team were named Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athletes, the association announced today, June 10.
To be considered for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.5 grade point average (GPA) or higher, be in their sophomore year-or-later, and have rowed in one of their institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boats for 75 percent of the spring races or the regional conference event.
EMU's honorees for the 2021 season were: sophomores Emma Boersen (West Olive, Mich.-Grand Haven), Chloe Hinojosa (Kewanee, Ill.-Kewanee), and Alexis Kettler (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton), juniors Anna Eschenburg (Bruce Twp., Mich.-Romeo), Brianna Gracey (Dayton, Ohio-Chaminade Julienne), Mary Hemgesberg (Freeland, Mich.-Freeland), and Caitlin Rodanhisler (Hopkins, Mich.-Hopkins), seniors Lauren Ahern (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Walled Lake Western), Grace Burke (Coloma, Mich.-Benton Harbor), Brynne Harder (Fenwick, Mich.-Saranac), and graduate students Haley Dutton (West Salem, Wis.-West Salem), and Karson Mahaney (Troy, Ohio-Miami East).
The Eagles were tied for the third-most awardees in the Colonial Athletic Association as Villanova University paced the league with 16, followed by Northeastern University (14), while Eastern Michigan and the University of Delaware tied with 12. Additionally, the University of San Diego earned 10 nods and the University of Connecticut saw nine student-athletes garner accolades.
The First Varsity Eight boat placed sixth at the CAA Championships in 6:53.003, May 16, where Boersen, Ahern, Dutton, Rodanhisler, Mahaney, and Hemgesberg all chipped in for the effort. Boerson was later honored as the lone Eagle to make the All-CAA Team.
Meanwhile, the Second Varsity Eight team recorded a time of 7:00.122 at the league meet for fourth place, May 16. The boat consisted of CRCA honorees Burke, Hinajosa, and Kettler, who were narrowly edged by Northeastern by 6.708 seconds.
Two Eagles on the Third Varsity Eight boat made the CRCA list in rowers Eschenburg and Gracey. The boat finished fifth in the regatta in 7:41.314. Lastly, Harder assisted the Varsity Four boat achieved fifth overall in 7:58.237.
