The MAC Outdoor Championships take place Friday-Saturday, May 7-8

OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Although it feels as if the outdoor season just started, the Eastern Michigan University track & field program is ready to showcase its talents at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships. The league's two-day meet takes place Friday-Saturday, May 7-8, and will be hosted by Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Friday's action is set to begin at 9 a.m. with the men's 10,000m race, while the men's hammer throw kicks off Saturday's events at 9:30 a.m.

"We've had a strong outdoor season and we're excited about heading to Oxford to compete," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks.  "We expect tough battles on both sides but our athletes have some high goals in mind and we're ready for the challenge."

The men hope to complete their Triple Crown hunt. In the fall, the harriers captured the cross country title as they saw four Eagles finish in the top-10. The team bested runner-up Miami, 39-63, for the Green and Gold's second-straight MAC victory, Nov. 21. During the indoor track & field season, EMU pulled together a hard-fought win at the conference meet where it topped Akron, 184-176, Feb. 27.

Heading into the meet, the men's team takes up 21 top-3 positions in the league across all events. Junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) owns the fastest 1500m run time in the MAC with an incredible 3:40.74. The Iceland product also boasts a 13:45.66 time in the 5000m, the best in the MAC by nearly 15 seconds. Furthermore, those times are both Icelandic national records.

Classmate Payne Wylie (Elstow, Saskatchewan-Colonsay School) is the top 110m hurdler in the conference so far this season with a 14.25 clip. In the field, redshirt senior Baboucar Sallah-Mohammed (Windhoek, Namibia-Fishburne Military) is No. 1 in both the long jump (7.87m) and triple jump (15.57m) lists. Senior Chukwusom Enekwechi (Valley Stream, N.Y.-Jamaica Gateway to the Sciences (Monroe College)) has a season-high shot put toss of 17.99m to place him first in the league. Lastly, fellow thrower Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) is in sole possession of first place in the discus by over four meters (58.27m).

The women's squad has an opportunity to spoil a Triple Crown. Northern Illinois hoisted the cross country trophy in the fall and the indoor track & field trophy in the winter. However, for the outdoor season, several notable returners on EMU are poised to make an impact at the MAC championship meet in graduate students Kristine Bourg (Shorewood, Ill.-Joliet West), Kolby Ganther (Park City, Kan.-Northeast Magnet (Garden City C.C.)), Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga), and Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Illinois-Montini Catholic)

In the MAC rankings, the women's team has 15 top-five spots as the program prepares for the trip to Miami University. Junior Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) rounds out the top-3 in the 400m dash (55.10) while classmate Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peter's) is runner-up in the 100m hurdles (13.94). Additionally, both the 4x100 and 4x400 squads rank second in the league with times of 45.42 and 3:42.08, respectively.

Senior Quintella Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.-Saint Mary's (Texas Southern)), the two-time indoor MAC champion in the high jump, is first in the conference in the event with a height of 1.76m. Fellow jumper, junior Nina Ward (Fairfield, Ohio-Fairfield) is tied for third in the high jump (1.71m) and leads the league in the long jump (6.31m).

The men's team last won the outdoor conference title in 2018 to secure the team's eighth Triple Crown in program history, finishing the meet with a 184.5-166 advantage over second-place Akron. On the women's side, the last time they hoisted the outdoor MAC trophy was in 2016 after besting Akron, 152-130 when they also completed their Triple Crown hunt.
