JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track & field program had another strong outing on the third day of the NCAA East Preliminary Championships in Jacksonville, Fla., today, May 28. EMU ultimately saw graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) once again qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., this time in the discus throw.
"We're really proud of Taige," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "It's an amazing accomplishment to qualify for the NCAAs in two events. It was also great to see Zach Harkey achieve a personal-best. I know that our three other athletes who competed today are disappointed but they are among our toughest competitors and I know they'll use this experience as motivation for the future."
In the final flight of the afternoon, Bryant registered a toss of 56.79m to notch 11th place overall in the competition to land another spot at the NCAAs. This will be the first time in school history that an Eagle will compete in the discus at the NCAA Championships in Division I. The Oklahoma native now has the opportunity to showcase his skills in both the hammer and discus throws in Eugene, Ore.
"It's déjà vu all over again," said Assistant Head Coach Brian Korn.
Also competing in the event was classmate Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio-Huron). In the second flight, Harkey produced a career-high heave of 55.13m to finish 15th. The Ohio native wraps up his strong season with the third-best discus throw in school history and the highest mark in the hammer throw (66.51m). Meanwhile, redshirt senior Baboucar Sallah-Mohammed (Windhoek, Namibia-Fishburne Military (Bethany College)) concluded his solid year with a 37th-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 14.92m.
In the 5000m race, redshirt sophomore Chris Devaney (New Plymouth, New Zealand-New Plymouth) crossed the finish line in 14:47.86 for 46th while junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) took 47th in 14:59.30 as both runners saw their phenomenal seasons come to a close. In the indoor season, Devaney captured the Mid-American Conference Championship 5000m crown with a meet record time of 14:17.81. Later in the year, the New Zealand product ran a personal-best 13:59.12 in the event at the Rick Erdmann Twilight meet, April 17. Additionally, Magnusson had a monster year as he set Icelandic national records in the indoor 3000m (7:53.72), outdoor 1500m (3:40.74), and outdoor 5000m (13:45.66).
Eastern Michigan will be represented by one Eagle on the final day of the NCAA East Preliminary Championships tomorrow, May 29, in senior Quintella Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.-Saint Mary's (Texas Southern)). Johnson comes into the meet with a high jump seed mark of 1.78m which she set at the Mid-American Conference Championships, May 8, for first place. The high jump competition begins at 1 p.m. ET.
