MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team concluded its four-game, Mid-American Conference series with in-state rival Central Michigan University today, May 23, inside Theunissen Stadium. Despite early success for EMU, it was CMU that emerged victorious, 8-4.
Offensively, four Eagles combined to contribute eight of Eastern's (20-27, 14-21 MAC) 12 hits. The game's four EMU RBIs were also split evenly among a group of four Eagles.
On the mound, Eastern used four hurlers to work through the contest. On in relief, sophomore Cameron Wagoner (Tecumseh, Mich.-Tecumseh) showed off his strong arsenal during his four innings of work. The right-handed hot baller gave up just one run during his outing, while adding two strikeouts to his impressive season resume. Fellow sophomore Trevor House (Okeana, Ohio-Ross) closed the game for EMU. He completed the final 2.2 of work on the mound, and was the only Eagle who did not allow a CMU run during the game. House struck out three and allowed just one hit.
After producing just two total runs during the series' initial three games, the Green and White came out swinging in Sunday's series finale to the tune of two runs in the first inning. A double off the bat of junior Taylor Hopkins (Mason, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller) got things started, before senior captain Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) slapped a single. After Jones advanced to second on a wild pitch to put runners on second and third with no outs, it was junior Christian Bault (Maineville, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller (Lincoln Trails)) that delivered the game's first RBI. His groundout allowed Hopkins to score and EMU to move ahead, 1-0. Moments later, junior Gabe Denton (Clare, Mich.-Clare (North Iowa)) sent a RBI-single to left field to score Jones and push Eastern's lead to a pair 2-0.
With a 2-0 lead in hand, Eastern's defense took to the field in the bottom of the first. The explosive CMU offense, aided by two EMU errors, pushed two runs of its own across to tie the game, 2-2. The Chippewas, after halting Eastern's attack in the second, mustered another three runs in the second frame to move ahead, 5-2.
Despite tallying three hits in the second, third, and fourth innings, respectively, EMU was unable to get back on the board until the fifth inning. After senior Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) led off the inning with a single and moved to third via a passed ball and throwing error, it was Nick Jones who brought him home with a sacrifice fly. That got Eastern back within two, 5-3.
As Central continued to find success at the plate, Eastern continued to face a growing deficit. Down, 7-3, the Eagles crossed the plate once more in the top half of the seventh frame. Singles from senior Mike Monahan (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and Nate Jones helped EMU find the corners before Hopkins aided with a sacrifice fly. The fourth run of the day was the last for Eastern, however.
One more CMU run in the bottom of the seventh pushed its advantage back to four, 8-4, a margin which remained through the final innings of play. Despite its best efforts, Eastern was unable to mount the comeback.
Eastern Michigan will conclude its season next weekend with a home bout against Kent State University. The four-game set will begin with a nine-inning game Friday, May 28, before a doubleheader Saturday, May 29, and a single game Sunday, May 30.
