MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell to Central Michigan University, 14-0, in seven innings, May 21 at Theunissen Stadium.
Senior Eli Gora (Cincinnati, Ohio-Anderson) led the Eagles with two hits on the afternoon, while junior Will Oberg (Wayzata, Minn.-Wayzata (Heartland)) provided Eastern's only other hit of the afternoon.
Eastern saw senior captain Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) get on base in the first inning, but the catcher did not not advance farther than first base before the end of the inning.
The Chippewas were the first to cross the plate, scoring with a two-out single to take a 1-0 lead out of the first.
Gora looked to tie the score with a line drive shot to the left field fence on the first pitch of the second inning. Despite the ball going over the wall, the CMU left fielder managed to get a glove on the ball to bring it back in to play, forcing the senior to settle for a double. Unable to move him any further, the Chippewas would hold their 1-0 lead.
CMU added to its lead in the bottom of the third, capitalizing on EMU errors with two outs to plate three runs and take a 4-0 lead into the fourth inning.
In the top of the fourth, Gora knocked his second hit of the afternoon, but that was all the Eagles would see in the frame.
Central added one run in the bottom of the fourth, 5-0, before EMU forced a double play to end it.
Eastern opened the fifth inning with a double down the left field line by Oberg, but would not be able to bring him around to score and remained shutout for another inning.
CMU would put up a seven-spot in the bottom of the fifth to take a 12-0 lead.. Adding two more in the sixth, the Eagles would not be able to find a response in the top of the seventh and ultimately fall to the Chippewas, 14-0.
Eastern Michigan continues its series with Central Michigan tomorrow, May 22, with a doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m.
