Eagles Fall to Rockets in Series Finale
5/18/2021 10:04:00 PM | Baseball
Toledo's 12-run inning was too much to overcome for EMU
Freshman right-hander Nick Chittum (Grosse Ile, Mich.-Grosse Ile) made his first career start for the Green and White, tossing 2.0 innings and striking out two over his frames. Sophomore Luke Russo (Howell, Mich.-Howell) closed out the game for the Eagles, pitching a career-high 3.0 innings with a personal-best five strikeouts.
On offense, senior Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) paced EMU with three hits, while also tying for the team lead driving in two runs.
Facing a little trouble early on, the Rockets put two runners in scoring position with one out. However, Chittum made the play at the plate on a slow grounder to the mound and subsequently got the final Rocket batter to lineout to end the inning without giving up a run.
Despite keeping Toledo off the board in the first, the Rockets would be the first to put runs on the board, taking a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run in the top of the second.
Eastern was quick to respond, taking the lead in the bottom of the second. Beginning with a one-out single from senior Eli Gora (Cincinnati, Ohio-Anderson), classmate Mike Monahan (Saline, Mich.-Saline) drew a walk and junior Will Oberg (Wayzata, Minn.-Wayzata) reached first on an error by the Rockets to load the bases. Bringing up Jared Kauffman (Springboro, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick), the senior picked up the RBI after being hit by pitch to score EMU's first run of the game.
Bringing the top of the order back to the plate, junior Taylor Hopkins (Mason, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller) knocked a shallow single on the first base line to score one run, and the Green and White added a second on a throwing error by Toledo to take the lead, 3-2. With runners on first and second for Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), Eastern executed a well-timed hit-and-run on his single to left center to add one more run and take a 4-2 lead into the third.
Toledo took the lead back almost immediately, putting together a 12-run top of the third to take a 10-run lead, 14-4. Adding two in the fourth, the Rockets held a 16-4 lead before the Eagles would find a response.
Driving the first pitch he saw over the left field fence, Oberg led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot. Kauffman and Nate Jones followed with back-to-back doubles to left center for another EMU run.
A third run came in the form of a groundout to first base by Hopkins, scoring Nate Jones, making the score 16-7 Rockets after four full innings.
After senior Holden Cook (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Casady (Murray State)) held Toledo off the board in the fifth and sixth innings, EMU would add a couple runs in the bottom of the sixth. Beginning with a walk to Kauffman, Nate Jones would single to right field in the next at-bat, while a walk to Nick Jones two batters later would load the bases for the Green and White.
Freshman Evan Sines (Lancaster, Ohio-Lancaster) would come through with the bases loaded, knocking a single to right center field that would plate two, closing out the sixth inning with the Rockets in the lead trimmed to 16-9.
Russo took over on the mound in the seventh for the Green and White, needing to face just four batters to keep the Rockets off the board and send Eastern back to the plate.
Adding one more run in the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles put together a two-out rally, consisting of a single from Kauffman and ensuing triple from Nate Jones, his first of the season. With Kauffman scoring, the Eagles recorded their 10th run of the night, pulling within six, 16-10.
Russo would hold the Rockets scoreless in the eighth and ninth, but the Eastern offense would not be able to produce any more runs and ultimately fell to the Rockets, 16-10.
Eastern returns to the field Friday, May 21 at Central Michigan. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
