-- The Eastern Michigan University track & field program prepares to give it their all this weekend at the Toledo Rocket Invitational, Saturday, May 15. The action is set to begin at the UT Outdoor Track & Field Facility at 9 a.m. From there, EMU will wait to see who will qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Championships. The regional meet will take place on the campus of the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. from Wednesday, May 26, through Sunday, May 29.

After a strong showing at the 2021 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, the men's hammer throw squad moved back to No. 1 in Division I according to the U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association. The group's top-four season-bests in the event total just under 260m, with an average toss of 64.96m per Eagle. Leading the pack for the Green and Gold is graduate student Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio-Huron). In Oxford, Ohio, Harkey reached a distance of 66.51m to set a new school record, passing his current teammate graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) who notched a 66.01m earlier in the season.

Individually, numerous Eagles are heating up at the right time as many achieved personal-bests at the league meet, May 7-8. Sophomore sprinter Kyle Martin (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Ann Arbor Huron) notched career-high times in both the 100m and 200m dash preliminaries, finishing in 10.74 and 21.95, respectively. Classmate Trent Barron (Flint, Mich.-Carman-Ainsworth) PR'd with a 48.89 clip in the 400m dash for sixth place.

Junior Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) hit career-best times in the 200m (5th – 24.07) and 400m (6th – 54.50) races to earn quality points for her team. Fellow junior Morgan Iverson (Hoschton, Ga.-Mill Creek) grabbed bronze in the 100m hurdles in a personal-best time of 14.18 seconds. In the finals, classmate Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Mary's) eclipsed a new PR of 13.87 to take home the gold.

In the 400m hurdles, sophomore Dante Lander (Dayton, Ohio-West Carrollton (Central Michigan)) placed second in 52.23 to shave almost a full second off from his previous best of 53.15. Meanwhile, junior teammate Payne Wylie (Elstow, Saskatchewan-Colonsay School) recorded a personal-best in the same event with a 53.67 time. Redshirt sophomore harrier Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio- Thomas Worthington) earned a third-place finish in the 10,000m race in 29:46.19 to improve his event time by over one minute (30:55.81)

In the field, sophomore jumper Nya Lakin (Dacula, Ga.-Mill Creek) leaped to a personal-best mark in the triple jump at 11.48m for tenth. Additionally, senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) produced a school-record hammer throw of 58.87m to place fourth in the event.

Graduate student Kristine Bourg (Shorewood, Ill.-Joliet West) was runner-up in the javelin throw after reaching a career-high distance of 44.07m. Bryant also PR'd in the javelin as he placed tenth in the competition with a heave of 48.43m. Redshirt freshman Miranda Cadwell (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield South) progressed in the shot put with a toss of 13.64m to round out the top-10. Graduate student Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill.-Montini Catholic) totaled 4400 points in the heptathlon to set a new personal-best in the event.
