BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Seniors Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) and Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) led the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team on the final day of the Hoosier Collegiate Invitational Sunday, April 4. Overall, the pair finished in a tie for 15th-place with a two-day mark of 12-over 225 on the par-71, 7,432 yard Pfau Course.
For Celone, the finish marked the 12th top-15 showing of his career and the second of the season. Meanwhile, it was the third top-15 finish of the year and ninth overall for Collins in 30 career events.
Michigan State won its first tournament of the season, taking home the title with a 885 (298-289-298). MSU finished seven shots ahead of host Indiana and 12 ahead of third-place Nebraska. Not only did the Spartans capture the team trophy, but senior James Piot also took medalist honors to give the Spartans a sweep of the hardware. The individual title was Piot's first of the season and third of his career. Piot shot a 73 on Sunday to finish the event two-over par 215 (72-70-73).
Freshman MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago) added another round of 76 on the final day for a 231 (79-76-75) in a tie for 34th, while redshirt junior Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) posted a 236 (78-78-80) to reside in 48th. Senior Tyler Rayman (Otsego, Mich.-Otsego) rounded out the scoring, posting a 237 (85-75-77) for 51st.
In his first collegiate action, freshman Patrick Deardorff (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston) closed strong with a 76 for a 256 (88-92-76) as an individual participant.
Eastern Michigan returns to Indiana next weekend for the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, April 10-11.
