Eagles Wrap Up Friday Meets

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. & ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track & field program wrapped up a pair of meets today, April 30, in Florida and Michigan. Down south, redshirt senior Baboucar Sallah-Mohammed (Windhoek, Namibia-Fishburne Military (Bethany College)) closed out his time at the University of North Florida Invitational competing in the triple jump. Meanwhile, back in the Mitten State, a number of Eagles gained valuable experience at Oakland University's Grizzly Mini Meet.

"It was nice to get one last chance to compete before the MAC meet," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "The conditions weren't favorable for most of the events at Oakland but we made the best of it. We're excited to prepare for next weekend in Oxford."

At the UNF Invitational, Sallah-Mohammed earned bronze as he produced a solid 15.53m mark. For the Namibia native, that distance is his second-best of the 2021 outdoor season thus far, just behind his 15.57 performance at the Texas Relays, March 27.

Back in Michigan, EMU dominated the Grizzly Mini Meet. The throwers saw great success once again with three different Eagles winning the shot put, discus, and hammer throw. Sophomore Omar Ibrahim (Cairo, Egypt-Aspire Academy) paced the field in the shot put with an outdoor PR of 15.37m. Graduate teammate Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio-Huron) also notched a career-high, capturing the discus throw at 54.10m to crack the top three in program history. Meanwhile, redshirt senior Chukwusom Enekwechi (Valley Stream, N.Y.-Jamaica Gateway to the Sciences) is now fifth in school history with a distance of 52.30m.

On the women's side, the Green and White won both hurdle events. Junior Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peter's) took the 100m hurdles in 13.94, while classmate Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Ann Arbor Pioneer) ran a 1:04.19 time in the 400m hurdles for first place.

Senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) earned gold in the hammer throw with a toss of 53.57m to go along with a second-place finish in the shot put (13.54m). In addition, teammate Miranda Cadwell (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield South) grabbed the top spot in the discus with a 45.41m heave and reached a career-high in both the hammer throw (49.79m) and shot put (13.18m).

For the Eagles, they now prepare for the outdoor Mid-American Conference Championships. The league title meet will be held in Oxford, Ohio, hosted by Miami University, Friday-Saturday, May 7-8. The men's side aims to complete the triple crown after capturing the cross country and indoor track & field titles. Meanwhile, the women's team looks to earn their first championship of the season.
