BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University senior Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) notched an opening day 148 (75-73) and sits just six shots off the pace at the Hoosier Collegiate Intercollegiate, April 3. Celone was able to move up four spots in the second round with a pair of birdies on the back nine to finish the day in a tie for fifth of the par 71, 7,432-yard Pfau Course at Indiana University.
As a team, the Eagles carded a day one score of 609 (309-300) to sit in eighth-place in the predominately Big 10 Conference-heavy event. Michigan State leads after two rounds of play on Saturday. The Spartans are 19-over-par 587 (298-289), 10 strokes ahead of the host Hoosiers and 12 in front of third-place Nebraska.
Additionally, MSU's James Piot leads the individual race by four shots. He is even-par 142 through two rounds after posting a one-over-par 72 and then a one-under-par 70.
Senior Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) finished the day in a tie for 24th at 153 (77-76). Freshman MJ Smith (Rockford, Ill.-Winnebago) shaved three strokes off this opening round 79 to post a second round 76 for a 155 in a tie for 38th, while redshirt junior Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) posted a 156 (78-78) to reside in 43rd. Senior Tyler Rayman (Otsego, Mich.-Otsego) rounded out the scoring, posting a 160 (85-75) for 51st.
In his first collegiate action, freshman Patrick Deardorff (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston) posted a 180 (88-92) as an individual participant.
The Eagles are slated to begin Sunday's final round between 9:55 and 10:35 a.m.
