Track & Field Prepares for Weekend Tune-Ups

Eastern squeezes in two meets before conference action
ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. & JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track & field program will squeeze in a pair of meets in preparation for the highly-anticipated Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships. The Eagles will split up once again this week with members in Florida and Michigan.
Redshirt senior jumper Baboucar Sallah-Mohammed (Windhoek, Namibia-Fishburne Military (Bethany College)) will venture south for the UNF Invite hosted by the University of North Florida. The meet is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, April 29-30. Action on the Jax Track at Hodges Stadium is set for 12 p.m. and 10 a.m., respectively.
Meanwhile, the Eagles will make one more trip to Rochester Hills, Mich. for Oakland University's Grizzly Mini Meet. The one-day meet takes place on Friday, April 30, with a start time still to be determined.
The men's throwers look to improve even further this week after taking a significant step forward at the Knights Invite, April 23-24. According to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the men's hammer throw squad is ranked No. 2 in the country. The top four marks on EMU average a whopping 64.76m per toss. Meanwhile, the discus crew is No. 14 in Division I as the top four distances average out to 50.78m.
Several Eagles moved up in the conference rankings in their respective events and after strong performances last weekend. On the women's side, sophomore Alyson Davis (Summerfield, N.C.-Weaver Academy for the Performing and Visual Arts) achieved a personal-best time of 11.70 in the 100m dash for the third-best time in the MAC. Graduate student Kolby Ganther (Park City, Kan.-Northeast Magnet (Garden City C.C.)) is No. 6 in the 200m dash after hitting a 24.17 clip.
Middle-distance runner junior Chevonne Wheeler (Redford, Mich.-Divine Child) also PR'd at the Knights Invite, running 2:11.56 in the 800m, good for sixth in league action. Additionally, a trio of EMU hurdlers rank high in the 100m race. Juniors Morgan Iverson (Hoschton, Ga.-Mill Creek) (4th – 14.25), Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton) (T-6th – 14.29), and Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peter's) (T-6th – 14.29) look to improve even further before the MAC Outdoor Championships.
The women's 4x400 crew of juniors Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Ann Arbor Pioneer) and Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School), senior Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start), and redshirt senior Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) for the No. 2 time in the conference.
Lastly, junior Nina Ward (Fairfield, Ohio-Fairfield) reached a new career-high in the high jump with a bound of 1.71, tying for the third-best leap in the league.

Junior Payne Wylie (Elstow, Saskatchewan-Colonsay School) (14.25) and redshirt junior Devonte Findlay (Lauderhill, Fla.-Blanche Ely) (14.27) hold the top two spots in the MAC. In addition, sophomore Dante Lander (Dayton, Ohio-West Carrollton (Central Michigan)) grabbed the top time in the conference after running a red-hot 53.15 in the 400m hurdles.
First-year jumper Ousman Kamara (Coatesville, Pa.-Coatesville) reached a height of 2.04m in the high jump to round out the top-6 in league action.
In the throwing department, graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) remains the No. 1 discus thrower in the MAC after setting a new program in the event with a 58.27m heave. Meanwhile in the hammer throw, classmate Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio-Huron) currently sits fourth (65.71m) while senior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) (63.97m) is fifth in the Mid-American Conference.
