The Graduate Student earns honor for the second time

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University track and field graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) was named the Mid-American Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced today, April 28. This marks the second weekly honor in Bryant's collegiate career, and the third for the men's track and field program so far this outdoor season.

Bryant took a major step forward in the discus at the Knights Invite, April 24. The veteran thrower surpassed former Eagle Clark Wilson's record distance of 56.60m set in 2005 by producing a 58.27m hurl for first place.  Additionally, Bryant improved on his previous best that he set earlier in the season by over five meters (53.01m) at the Raleigh Relays, March 26. The Oklahoma native now owns the school record in both the discus and hammer throw. The graduate student and fellow discus throwers are No. 14 in Division I according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), as the top-four distances average out to 50.78m.

The Eastern Michigan University track & field program will squeeze in a pair of meets in preparation for the highly-anticipated Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships. Redshirt senior jumper Baboucar Sallah-Mohammed (Windhoek, Namibia-Fishburne Military (Bethany College)) will venture south for the UNF Invitational hosted by the University of North Florida. The meet is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, April 29-30. Action on the Jax Track at Hodges Stadium is set for 12 p.m. and 10 a.m., respectively. Meanwhile, the Eagles will make one more trip to Rochester, Mich. for Oakland University's Grizzly Mini Meet. The one-day meet takes place on Friday, April 30, with a start time still to be determined.
