Loberg and Watson Finish Inside Top-20 at MAC Championships

SILVER LAKE, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Continuous improvement was once again the story for the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team, as the squad was able to shave off four strokes from the previous round at the 2021 Mid-American Conference Championship, April 24. Head Coach Stephanie Jennings' club notched a 309 during Saturday's final round to finish in fifth place with a cumulative score of 945 (323-313-309) on the par-72, 6,277-yard Silver Lake Country Club course.
Of the 10 teams participating in the championship, Eastern was the only one to post round over round improvement.
No. 13 Kent State captured its 22nd consecutive league title, finishing with a 878 (286-286-296). Northern Illinois University was the runner up with a 914, followed by Akron (920), Toledo (943), and EMU. Ball State (965), Ohio (969), Western Michigan (978), Bowling Green (983), and Central Michigan (988) rounded out the MAC standings.
EMU sophomore Olivia Loberg (Bend, Ore.-Summit) carded birdies on No. 7, 10, and 11 for a one-over 73 and her fourth consecutive top-20 finish of the season. Overall, she became EMU's highest finisher at the league's championship event since 2018 with a tie for 12th with a 232 (81-78-73).
For her season-long efforts, Loberg collected Second Team All-MAC honors for the first-time in her career. She is the first EMU golfer to earn the honor since 2017 and just the 16th different Eastern Michigan student-athlete all-time to collect a league accolade.
In her first MAC Championship, freshman Anna Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland) added a 77 on Saturday to take 16th-place with a 235 (80-78-77). Classmates Sophia Wygonik (Westland, Mich.-Livonia Franklin) and Paige Zolciak (Perrysburg, Ohio-St. Ursula Academy) finished deadlocked for 28th with a 242, adding a 79 and an 83, respectively.
In her final collegiate tournament, senior Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio- Anthony Wayne) recorded a 245 (84-81-80) to tie for 36th-place.
The Golden Flashes' Caley McGinty won medalist honors with a four-under 212 (73-69-70).
Playing a mostly underclassmen lineup, the future is bright for EMU after finishing the year with the 16th lowest team scoring average in program history at 313.6. Overall, Eastern Michigan finished in the top-five at a trio of tournaments, including a runner-up showing at the Akron Invitational, April 16-17.
Individually, Loberg finished with the eighth-lowest scoring average in EMU history at 75.78. Watson followed with a 78.72 season average, followed by Connelly (79.89), Wygonik (81.00), Zolciak (83.80), and freshman Tatyana Nyambane (Nairobi, Kenya-Nord Anglia International School Dubai) (85.93).
