KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team battled in Kalamazoo but ultimately fell 3-4 to Western Michigan University on Friday, April 23.
"This was a really tough loss," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "We had some great opportunities, we just did not capitalize on them. We played great in doubles and got amazing singles performances from Emma-Lou and Grace. We just let them off the hook in a couple other spots."
Eastern came out with energy early, clinching the doubles point to gain an early lead over the Broncos. Redshirt freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sur-L'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) and redshirt sophomore Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Licuem Lublin (Salem)) were first to finish as they earned a dominant 6-0 win at No. 3. The reigning Mid-American Conference Doubles Team of the Week continued their winning ways. Redshirt junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School (Eastern Florida State)) and redshirt freshman Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) downed their opponent at No. 1, 6-2.
In singles action, the Eagles fought hard and earned two points for their effort. Redshirt junior Grace Whitney (Imlay City, Mich.-Imlay City (Wright State)) bested her Bronco opponent at No. 6, 7-6, 7-5, while Pommier's matchup went to a third set at No. 3, 6-1, 6-7, 6-2. Additionally, redshirt junior Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio CEBES (Wright State)) lost a tough matchup at No. 3, 5-7, 6-7. EMU was unable to close out on WMU, falling 3-4.
"We have definitely shown improvement through the second half of the conference season. We just have to keep putting in the work and hopefully we can get over the top for a win," added Wiseman.
The Green and White come home to the Chippewa Club in Ypsilanti on Sunday, April 26, as they welcome Miami (OH) for the second to last home match of the season. The action is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. To stay up to date with Eastern Michigan tennis, go to EMUEagles.com or follow us on Twitter (@EMUEaglesTennis) and Instagram (@EMU_Tennis).
