HILLSDALE, Mich. & ORLANDO, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University track & field program had an impressive showing at both the Hillsdale College "GINA" Relays and the Knights Invite, April 23. In Michigan, several EMU runners recorded career performances on the Ken Herrick track. Meanwhile down south, the men's and women's throwers dominated the field.
"At this point, we're trying to get in what we need to get ready for the MAC meet and today was another good step forward," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "The throwers continue to shine and we're seeing good things in all event areas. It's just a matter of putting it all together as a team when the time comes."
On the campus of Hillsdale College, junior Karlie Swanson (Coffs Harbour, Australia-Bellingen (Boise State)) produced a career-high time of 4:27.91 in the 1500m finals for third overall. Former Eagle Natalie Cizmas captured the top spot in the race in 4:22.96 as an unattached runner. Freshman Linus Vennemann (Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, Germany-Gymnasium "In der Wüste") battled hard in the 3000m steeplechase, rounding out the top-5 with a speedy 9:11.67. Redshirt sophomore teammate Noah Perrin (Akron, Ohio-Woodridge) hit yet another personal-best in the 5000m, clocking in at 14:44.30, over 15 seconds faster than his previous best.
"We had another great night with a lot of PR's across the board for both the men and women," said Assistant Coach Mark Rinker. "We are really getting prepared for the MAC meet. I'm excited for the next two weeks as we head to MAC."
In the field, two Eagles notched personal-bests in the hammer throw. For the men, sophomore Omar Ibrahim (Cairo, Egypt-Aspire Academy) registered a 44.49m toss for eighth. Meanwhile, senior Savanah Luthman (Minster, Ohio-Minster) finished bronze in the event as she recorded a 48.34m heave.
Down in Orlando, Eastern Michigan continued to dominate in the hammer throw. On the men's side, the Green and Gold grabbed five spots in the top-6, including four throws over 60m. The throwing clinic was highlight by graduate student Zach Harkey's (Huron, Ohio-Huron) career-best distance of 65.71m. Not only did the Ohio native pace all student-athletes, but he also moved to No. 2 on EMU's all-time hammer throw list. Senior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) also eclipsed a personal-high in the event with a 63.97m launch as he remains the No. 4 hammer thrower in program history.
Senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) hurled a 55.76m toss to take home in the gold in the hammer throw while redshirt freshman Miranda Cadwell (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield South) recorded yet another personal-best in the event, this time reaching a distance of 49.03m for fourth.
Also in the field, Eastern swept the javelin throw as Joe Duff (Crosswell, Mich.-Croswell (Concordia)) produced a 59.02m mark to lead the way. Additionally, graduate student Kristine Bourg (Shorewood, Ill.-Joliet West) captured the javelin crown with a 42.66m throw, besting the runner-up by over 2m.
On the track, sophomore Dante Lander (Dayton, Ohio-West Carrollton (Central Michigan)) notched a third-place finish in the 400m hurdles in an electric career-high time of 53.15. Sprinter Trent Barron (Flint, Mich.-Carman-Ainsworth) ran a 22.47 clip in the 200m dash for a new personal-best. Graduate student Kolby Ganther (Park City, Kan.-Northeast Magnet (Garden City C.C.)) also earned a career-high time in the 200m, hitting 24.17 to round out the top-5. After setting a career-best 5000m time last week, junior Janay Hall (Fayetteville, N.C.-South View) set a new personal-record in the 1500m, crossing the finish line 4:41.93.
Tomorrow, the Eagles will begin the final day of the GINA Relays at 11 a.m. with the women's pole vault open. In the Sunshine State, the women's discus throwers will kickoff the action at 9 a.m. The final event of the Knights Invite is the 4x400m relay, scheduled for 3:20 p.m.
