The Eagles and Spartans last met at the Head of the Grand in 2019
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University rowing team concludes its 2021 spring home slate by hosting Big 10 opponent Michigan State University Saturday, April 24, at Ford Lake. The duel against the Spartans is set for 11:45 a.m.
"We are very excited to race this weekend, but it's kind of bittersweet that it's our last home race," Head Coach Kemp Savage said. "This will be a good test for us. Though it has been nice racing at home, we're also looking forward to our next couple trips being very beneficial with CAA's coming up."
The last time EMU and MSU met was at the Head of the Grand, Oct. 5, 2019, where the Eagles took two first-place finishes in the V4+ and 2V4+ races. The victory in the V4+ race was the first time the Green and White has defeated a Big 10 opponent since 2008.
Saturday's regatta will be the first time Eastern Michigan races against Michigan State in a regular-season duel-style format.
EMU has close ties with Michigan State as assistant coach Nicole Marek was a standout student-athlete on the Spartan's rowing team and is a 2019 MSU graduate. She was an All-Big Ten selection and CRCA All-American honorable mention during her time with the Spartans. Her 6k and 2k times rank in the program's all-time top-10 records.
The Eagles will begin the day against MSU at 11:45 a.m. with the 1V8+ race at 2000 meters. The 2V8+ 2000-meter race will follow at 12 p.m. The 1V4+ race is slated for 12:15 p.m., while the 3V8+/N8 race will conclude the competition at 12:30 p.m.
Spectators are welcome at the race, but Eastern Michigan encourages fans to abide by the Ford Lake Park guidelines regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. Guidelines are available at ytown.org. There will be live streaming via the team's Instagram accounts at Instagram.com/emurowing.
