Eagles will compete at Hillsdale College and the University of Central Florida
HILLSDALE, Mich. & ORLANDO, Fla. -- After a spectacular weekend, the Eastern Michigan University track & field program look to build upon their success with meets taking place in Michigan and Florida. The Eagles will trek a little over an hour southwest to the campus of Hillsdale College for the 54th annual Gina Relays, Thursday-Saturday, April 22-24. Meanwhile, other members of the squad will be in the Sunshine State for the University of Central Florida's Knights Invite, Friday-Saturday, April 23-24.
Hillsdale College had a strong indoor season with both teams scoring points at the Division II NCAA Championships in Birmingham, Ala. The Chargers last competed outdoors at the Reggie Thomas Invitational hosted by Tiffin University. Meanwhile, UCF most recently wrapped up the Tom Jones Memorial meet in Gainesville, Fla. against tough southern competition.
Following the two multi-day meets, Eastern will prepare for the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, Friday-Saturday, May 7-8. This year, the conference meet is held in Oxford, Ohio hosted by Miami University. For the men, they hope to cap off a dominant year by earning the triple crown after winning both the league cross country and indoor track & field titles. The women's team on the other hand look to prevent a triple crown victory after Northern Illinois captured both titles as well.
Several Eagles recorded strong performances at the Grizzly PR Classic and Rick Erdmann Twilight meets, April 17, helping individuals move up in the Mid-American Conference rankings. On the men's side, sophomore Kyle Martin (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ann Arbor Huron) won the 100m dash at Oakland University with a personal-best time of 10.81. Martin's clip is good for third in the MAC, just .03 seconds behind the runner-up. In addition, redshirt senior Devonte Findlay (Lauderhill, Fla.-Blanche Ely) had a strong outing at the Grizzly PR Classic with a 110m hurdles time of 14.49, the third-fastest time in the MAC.
Junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) put his athleticism on full display in the 1500m run, registering a 3:40.74 clip for fifth place. For Magnusson, his time ranks third in EMU history and the fastest mark in the event in Icelandic history. The harrier now owns the Icelandic record in the indoor 3000m, outdoor 5000m, and 1500m runs. Additionally, his 1500m time paces the conference and ranks 23rd in the nation.
Fellow distance runners redshirt sophomore Chris Devaney (New Plymouth, New Zealand-New Plymouth) (13:59.12) and redshirt freshman Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College) (14:12.51) moved up to No. 2 and No. 3 in the league, respectively, after their speedy performances in the 5000m race at the Rick Erdmann Twilight meet.
The Green and White saw great marks on the women's side as well with multiple personal-bests. Junior Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) also set a career high, finishing the 400m dash in 55.10. Edward's time is good for third in conference action, while redshirt senior Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) is fifth (56.04).
Junior Janay Hall (Fayetteville, N.C.-South View) ran a 2:13.31 800m race for first place to achieve the No. 8 spot in the Mid-American Conference. For Hall, she is less than one second from cracking the top-5 in the event in the league.
In Kentucky, Lexi Seifert (Waterford, Pa.-Maria Villa Academy) had a solid showing in the 1500m, crossing the finish line in 4:29.19 for a new personal-best. Meanwhile, fellow classmate Karlie Swanson (Coffs Harbour, Australia-Bellingen (Boise State)) crushed her previous-best 5000m run time of 17:20.15 by achieving a career-high 16:54.60.
