YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team finished a perfect 2-0 day in the State of Indiana, besting both Butler and Indiana Tech, Friday, April 2. The Eagles earned a hard-fought victory over the Bulldogs, 4-3, and notched a win over the Warriors, 7-0.
Match 1: EMU 4, BU 3
Eastern (8-9; 1-5 MAC) took on Butler (4-5; 0-0 BIG East) for the Eagle's first match of the day. In doubles play, the pairing of redshirt freshman Isabelle Popma (Straphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) and redshirt junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School) grabbed a 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot, giving them their sixth win as a duo. Meanwhile the pairing of redshirt juniors Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal, Collegio CEBES (Wright State)) and Grace Whitney (Imlay City, Mich.-Imlay City (Wright State)) fell at the No. 2 spot, 6-7, ending their win streak of eight matches in doubles. The Green and White were unable to secure the doubles point as the No. 3 team suffered a loss, 1-6.
In singles action, Pelayo picked up her third win at No. 2 this season, dropping her Bulldog opponent in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. At No. 3, Ganesan also triumphed in straight sets, going 6-4, 6-3 for the win. Redshirt freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire sur I'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) cruised in singles, quickly taking down her competition at the No. 4 spot, 6-1, 6-0. Sealing the deal for the Eagles was Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin (Salem)) in three sets. After losing the first set, 3-6, the Poland native stormed back, going 6-3, 6-3 to give her team the win.
"This was an absolute dog fight of a match," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "We were very evenly matched and it really came down to a few key points at key spots in the line up. It was huge for our team as it was the first time we've come back from losing the doubles to take the match. We got great wins from Luisa, Vasavi, Emma-Lou, and Julia. All the matches we lost we really battled."
Match 2: EMU 7, ITU 0
For the second match of the day, the Green and White drove two hours north to Fort Wayne, Ind. to faceoff against Indiana Tech (11-2; 3-0 WHAC). Inside the Wildwood Racquet Club, the Eagles put on a show, blanking the Warriors, 7-0.
In doubles, Popma and Ganesan once again handled their opponent, producing a 6-0 win at No. 1. Teammates Pelayo and Whitney bounced back from their match against Butler, as they returned to their winning ways with a 6-2 victory in the No. 2 spot. Lastly, Pommiers and redshirt junior Morgan Ingram (Charlotte, N.C.-Grace Academy) were perfect, bouncing their Indiana Tech foe 6-0. For Morgan, she earned her first doubles victory of the season.
The Green and White built on their lead going into singles, dominating the competition at every spot by winning in straight sets in five-of-six spots. At the No. 1 position, Popma topped her opponent, 6-2, 6-3, to finish the day 1-1 individually. Pelayo ended her day perfect in singles action, going 6-2, 6-0, against the Warriors at No. 2. Ganesan grabbed a win at No. 3, 6-2, 6-4. The India native was flawless today, grabbing two doubles wins and two singles wins. Meanwhile, Pommiers registered a shutout, finishing 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 4 spot. Piatek recorded her second singles triumph of the day, dropping her counterpart in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. After losing a close match against Butler and finding herself down against Indiana Tech after one set, Whitney persevered to pull out the W, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0.
"This was a really solid win across the board," said Wiseman. "Indiana Tech is a very good up and coming NAIA program with great young talent and they made us earn it on every court. It was especially good for Grace to get her first singles win of the year and Morgan to get her first doubles win."
Next week, the Green and White will return to MAC play as they host Bowling Green State University, Friday, April 9. Action inside the Chippewa Club is set to begin at 1 p.m. Keep up with everything EMU tennis by visiting EMUEagles.com or follow us on Twitter (@EMUEagleTennis), or Instagram (@EMU_Tennis).
