Pelayo records three-win weekend in doubles and singles
DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team lost a close match, 4-3, at Northern Illinois, Sunday, April 18. The squad is now 10-12 overall, and 1-9 in Mid-American Conference play.
"We didn't play up to our normal standards in doubles and that proved to be the difference in the match," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "We did a good job of picking th energy and emotion up in singles, but we just fell a little short today."
Eastern was unsuccessful in doubles play with losses coming at No. 2, with redshirt juniors Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio CEBES (Wright State)) and Grace Whitney (Imlay City, Mich.-Imlay City (Wright State)), and No. 3, with redshirt junior Morgan Ingram (Charlotte, N.C.-Grace Academy (Marion Military Institute)) and redshirt sophomore Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin (Salem)). Both matches finished 2-6, while the competition at No. 1 remained unfinished.
In singles, Whitney was first to get the Eagles on the board, besting her opponent at No. 6, 6-2, 6-2. Redshirt freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sur-L'Adour-Dominique Saint Pau)) was the next winner for the Green and White, claiming the victory in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4. Playing consecutive matches at No. 3, Pelayo downed her Huskie opposition after a three-set battle, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. EMU was unable to secure a final point, ultimately falling to NIU 3-4.
