Baldvin Magnusson Sets New Icelandic National Record in 1500m

Track & Field Wins Grizzly PR Classic
ROCHESTER, Mich. & RICHMOND, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University track & field team had a productive day, showcasing its talents at the Grizzly PR Classic and Rick Erdmann Twilight meet, April 17. In total, the Eagles notched 19 first-place victories, recorded several personal-best marks, and earned one national record.
EMU had no trouble in Rochester, Mich. as both teams won handily, claiming titles in over half of the events. Moreover, multiple Eagles captured individual titles for the first time in their career. Redshirt junior Ian Cook (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) dominated the 3000m steeplechase for his first win donning the Green and Gold, clocking in at 10:01.39, over two minutes faster than the other competitor. Sophomore Kyle Martin (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ann Arbor Huron) triumphed for the first time in the 100m dash with a personal-best time of 10.81. The Ypsilanti, Mich. product also produced a career-high clip of 22.31 in the 200m dash.
Freshman Ousman Kamara (Coatesville, Pa.-Coatesville) took home the gold in the high jump with a height of 2.00m. Meanwhile, junior Janay Hall (Fayetteville, N.C.-South View) registered two career wins with a victory in the 800m (2:13.31) and the 5000m run (18:06.62). For Hall, her 5000m run time marked a new personal-high. Fellow classmate Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) also set a new career-high, finishing the 400m dash in 55.10.
Senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) moved up the all-time record book once again, this time in the discus throw. The Jamaica product's 38.88m heave is good for eighth in program history. Meanwhile, freshman teammate Miranda Cadwell (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield South) remains at eighth all-time in the hammer throw with a personal-best toss of 48.82m.
Eastern took spots 1-3 in four total events with the men's team sweeping the hammer and javelin throws while the women took the 400m dash and the discus.
Junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) put his athleticism on full display in the 1500m run, registering a 3:40.74 clip for fifth place. For Magnusson, his time ranks third all-time in EMU history and the fastest mark in the event in Icelandic history. The harrier now owns the Icelandic record in the indoor 3000m, outdoor 5000m, and 1500m runs.
Teammate Lexi Seifert (Waterford, Pa.-Maria Villa Academy) had a solid showing in the 1500m as well, crossing the finish line in 4:29.19 for a new personal-best. Fellow classmate Karlie Swanson (Coffs Harbour, Australia-Bellingen (Boise State)) crushed her previous-best 5000m run time of 17:20.15 by achieving a career-high 16:54.60.
Redshirt sophomore Chris Devaney (New Plymouth, New Zealand-New Plymouth) broke the sub-14 minute plateau in the 5000m with a personal-best 13:59.12 to take second place in the race. Fellow Kiwi redshirt freshman Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College) rounded-out the top-10 in the event as he clocked in at 14:12.51.
"I'm really excited for the guys," said Assistant Coach Mark Rinker. "Tonight was a big step forward. Vinny breaking another national record in what for him is an off-event, the 1500 was impressive! Chris breaking 14:00 in the 5000 for the first time is massive for him and the guys behind him, Toby and Josh, demonstrates how the intent of this group of guys to be great. I'm excited for whole group, it's a team effort."
Up next for the Eagles, the program will see yet another split-squad weekend. Some members will remain in the State of Michigan for the Gina Relays hosted by Hillsdale College, Thursday-Saturday, April 22-24. Meanwhile, others will venture south for the University of Central Florida's Knights Invite, Friday-Saturday, April 23-24.
