TOLEDO, Ohio. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team were unable to complete the season sweep of Toledo, losing 1-6 Sunday, April 11, at Twos Athletic Club in Toledo, Ohio. Both the Eagles and Rockets claimed the home-court matches of the 2021 season.
"We are struggling a little right now to find our rhythm in both singles and doubles," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "We are having some good moments, but aren't sustaining them. We have a tough week coming up and really need to put in some good work ahead of next weekend."
The Eagles were unable to clinch the doubles point, after two close comeback efforts. Redshirt juniors Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio CEBES (Wright State)) and Grace Whitney (Imlay City, Mich.-Imlay City (Wright State)) were behind 0-3 early in their matchup but battled back to take the match 6-4 at the No. 2 spot. Redshirt junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School (Eastern Florida State)) and redshirt freshman Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) found themselves down early but fought back, ultimately losing 4-6 at the No. 1 flight.
In singles play, redshirt freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sure-L'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) gave the Green and White its sole point of the day, finishing her opponent in straight sets at No. 4, 6-0, 6-3. Pelayo challenged the opposition at No. 2, forcing a third set but eventually fell, 5-7, 7-5, 0-1. EMU was unable to overcome the UT, losing 1-6.
Eastern Michigan will be on the road next week, first traveling to Muncie, Ind. to take on the Cardinals of Ball State Friday, April 16 at 1 p.m. Following the action there, the Eagles will head to DeKalb, Ill. and challenge the Huskies of Northern Illinois Sunday, April 18 at 1 p.m. To stay up to date with Eastern Michigan tennis, go to EMUEagles.com or follow us on Twitter (@EMUEaglesTennis) and Instagram (@EMU_Tennis)
