Franki Strefling posts double-double, records 1,000th career kill

Video Recap.

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)
- The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team (6-6, 6-6 MAC) defeated Ohio University (5-5, 5-5 MAC) in three sets (25-22, 25-21, 25-18) today, March 8, inside the Convocation Center. The Eagles have now won three of their last four matches.

Though senior Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan) has plenty of kills in her career, her first one of the afternoon against the Bobcats will always mean a little more. The kill brought her to 1,000 in her career, an accomplishment only 12 other Eagles in program history can say they have achieved. She is also the sixth player in EMU history to record both 1,000 career digs and kills.

Strefling posted a game-high 15 kills and added 14 digs. Helping out the attack were senior April Houston (Minnaepolis, Minn.-Southwest) and sophomore Samantha Basham (Granville, Ohio-Newark Catholic), who collected nine and eight kills, respectively.

Guiding the attack was sophomore Jayden Otto (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Prairie Ridge), who dished out 34 assists. Defensively, freshman Bella Hommes (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern) and sophomore Kamryn Stilwell (Parma, Ohio-Padua Franciscan) led the way with 17 and 13 digs, respectively.  Stillwell's 13 digs was a career-high. Redshirt sophomore Raeven Chase (Toronto, Ont.-Michael Power St. Joseph Catholic) showed why she is among the leaders in blocks per set in the Mid-American Conference, collecting seven total blocks on the afternoon.

Basham opened the match with a punishing kill, setting the tone for the first set. The Eagles would jump out to an early 6-2 lead, and would maintain that advantage until a 5-1 Bobcats run knotted the score at 17. Houston would end that run and springboard the Eagles on their own mini 3-0 run to go up, 20-17. Again, Ohio responded and tied the score at 20. However, the Green and White would not be denied, closing the set on a 5-2 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match, winning the first set, 25-22.

The second set was about as close as it could be, with neither team able to gain much of an advantage, seeing the two sides tie six times throughout the set. It wasn't until the score was tied at 16 when the Eagles were able to make a move. Closing the set on a 9-5 run, Strefling provided the finishing kill (25-21) to give Eastern the 2-0 advantage.

With a chance to close out the game, the Eagles came out in the third set and took control. Though the match was tied at 10, the Green and White never trailed in the set and cruised to a 25-18 victory. Strefling posted six of her 15 kills in the set.

Overall, the Eagles were able to lead the Bobcats in a variety of categories, including kills (40-33), hitting percentage (.165-.079), assists (37-28), and service aces (5-2).

Eastern Michigan will jump on the bus for a five-match road trip beginning with Bowling Green State University, Thursday, March 11. The Eagles and Falcons will hit the court at 1 p.m. on ESPN3. It will be the first meeting between the two teams this season.
