FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (EMUEagles.com) --
For the first day of the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., Eastern Michigan University will be represented by two weight throwers in senior Newlyn Stephenson ( Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) and graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial).

The most recent EMU weight thrower to compete in the indoor championships was former Eagle Anthony Jones in 2016. That season, Jones finished seventh in the event with a toss of 21.52m, earning him First Team All-American status.

The event will take place on Thursday, March 11 inside the University of Arkansas' Fowler Family Baseball and Track Training Center. Weight throw action is set to begin at 6:30 P.M. CT, starting with preliminaries followed by the finals.

The 2020 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships were supposed to take place March 13 and 14 at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, hosted University of New Mexico, however the championships were canceled due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

In 2019, the men's indoor weight throw champion was North Dakota State's Payton Otterdahl, who produced a 24.11m heave.

Meanwhile, junior harrier Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) will compete in the 3000m run for the Eagles. The men's event is expected to commence on March 13 at 3 P.M. CT inside the Razorbacks' Randal Tyson Center.

Former Eagle Alsu Bogdanova is the latest 3000m runner from Eastern to appear in the indoor championships in 2018. Bogdanova placed eleventh, crossing the finish line in 9:12.81 to earn Second Team All-American honors. The last men's distance runner to compete in the event for the indoor championships was former Eagle Willy Fink in 2016. Fink came in 11th with a 8:07.81 time, also earning a Second Team All-American nod.

The 2019 men's indoor 3000m run title winner was Wisconsin's Morgan McDonald, with a blazing 7:52.85. Magnusson's personal-best of 7:53.92, which he set at the GVSU Snowdown Showdown, Feb. 5-6, would have placed him third at the 2019 indoor championships.

The championships will be broadcast on ESPN3 starting at 12 P.M. ET.
