Franki Strefling posts double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team (5-6, 5-6 MAC) was defeated by the University of Toledo (3-7, 3-7 MAC) in three sets (21-25, 19-25, 22-25) Saturday, March 6, inside the Convocation Center.

The Eagles were led by senior Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan), who posted a double-double with a game-high 14 kills and added 14 digs. Strefling is now one kill shy of 1,000 in her career.

Senior April Houston (Minneapolis, Minn.-Southwest) and redshirt freshman Krista Blakely (Detroit, Mich.-University High School Academy) aided the attack, posting eight and seven kills, respectively.

Sophomore Jayden Otto (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Prairie Ridge) was in charge of the attack, collecting 35 assists. Defensively, freshman Bella Hommes (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern) finished with a game-high 20 digs. Sophomore Kamryn Stilwell (Parma, Ohio-Padua Franciscan) added seven digs, while redshirt sophomore Raeven Chase (Toronto, Ont.-Michael Power St. Joseph Catholic) had a team-high four blocks.

The Green and White came out firing in the first set, taking an early 4-1 lead. However, the Rockets found their groove, going on a 6-0 run to take a 7-4 lead. Eastern would get the score as close as one, 13-12, but Toledo had an answer for every run the Eagles made. The Rockets would never relinquish that advantage, winning the set, 25-21.

In the second set, the two teams went back-and-forth with the Green and White holding a slight 10-9 edge early on. However, with the match knotted at 14, Toledo embarked on an 11-5 run to close out the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

With the match on the line, Eastern and Toledo hung tight in set three. The two teams traded kills, with each taking leads throughout. The match was tied at 20, but Toledo again found another run to put the Eagles away. The Rockets finished the set on a 5-2 run, and took the match, 3-0.

Eastern Michigan will stay in Ypsilanti for its next match, which is set for Monday, March 8, against Ohio University. The game is set to begin at 2 p.m. It will be the first matchup between the two teams this season.
