The graduate student earns honor for the first time
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University track and field graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) was named the Mid-American Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced today, March 31. This marks the first weekly honor in Bryant's collegiate career, and the first weekly award for the men's track and field program in the young outdoor season.
At the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C., the seasoned EMU thrower put on a clinic in the hammer and discus throws. The Oklahoma native produced a hammer throw of 66.01m, surpassing former Eagle Keith Williams' 64.28m for the best throw in the event in EMU history. Additionally, Bryant's discus throw of 53.01m put him second in the EMU record book, just behind former Eagle Clark Wilson's 56.60m hurl. His hammer throw mark ranks first in the Mid-American Conference and 13th in the NCAA. In the discus, his distance is first in the MAC and 49th in Division I.
Currently, Bryant's hammer throw mark ranks first in the MAC and 13th in the NCAA. Additionally, the distance is the greatest in the conference by nearly three meters, with the runner up also donning the Green and Yellow as sophomore Kappa Bedoui (Doha, Qatar-Aspire Academy) produced a 63.33m toss. Meanwhile, Bryant's discus throw is also No. 1 in the league and 49th in Division I.
Up next for the Eagles, some will return south for the Spec Towns Invitational, Friday-Saturday, April 9-10. The two-day meet is hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. Meanwhile, others will stay in the mitten for Oakland University's Golden Grizzlies Invite. The OU meet takes place April 9 in Rochester, Mich.
