Ganesan wins fourth-consecutive singles contest

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team lost to the University at Buffalo, 2-5, Sunday, March 28 at the Miller Tennis Center in Williamsville, N.Y. Eastern is now 1-5 in Mid-American Conference action, and 7-9 overall.
"We didn't do a good job setting the tone early on and we struggled to get momentum back after doubles," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "I felt like we got really great effort at a lot of the spots, but just couldn't get over the top today."
Redshirt juniors Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio Cebes (Wright State)) and Grace Whitney (Imlay City, Mich.-Imlay City (Wright State)) continue to put on a clinic in doubles play,as they extended their streak to eight consecutive wins. The duo downed their Buffalo opponent, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot.
"Vasavi did a great job to come back from 2-5 in the first set to win, and then held off a furious charge in the second set for another great win, " added Wiseman. "Luisa was able to break through and ger her first MAC win against a very tough opponent, who fought tooth and nail to the last point."
It was redshirt junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School (Eastern Florida State)) who put the Eagles on the board first in singles, besting her opponent in straight sets, 7-6, 7-5, at No. 3. Ganesan improves her singles win streak to four-straight. Pelayo added another point for the Green and White, battling through three sets to earn the victory. The Porto, Portugal native snapped her losing streak at No. 2, winning 6-1, 0-6, 7-5. Redshirt freshman Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) lost a close matchup, 6-7, 5-7, at No. 1, as Eastern Michigan fell to Buffalo, 2-5.
Next up for Eastern is a doubleheader at Butler and at Indiana Tech, Friday, April 2.
