Junior Gabe Denton delivered the team's lone RBI
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – After thumping its in-state rival and Mid-American Conference foe, Western Michigan University, 9-4, yesterday, March 27, it was the Broncos who returned the favor to the Eastern Michigan University baseball team today, March 28. WMU put up 10 hits to secure an 8-1 victory in game two of the four-game set between the schools inside Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field.
The loss moves Eastern (7-8, 3-3 MAC) back to even in its league ledger.
Although a pair of seven-inning games was originally on today's schedule, inclement weather in Kalamazoo forced the teams to push the doubleheader back until tomorrow. It is unlikely that two games could have been successfully played Sunday.
A convocation of Eagles got time on the mound as five different hurlers went to work in the contest. Junior righty Justin Meis (Pittsburg, Pa.-Bethel Park) got the start for Eastern and tossed 4.0 innings. He gave way to sophomore Trevor House (Okeana, Ohio-Ross), who completed one frame before handing the ball to senior Shane Easter (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Comstock), who delivered the best three outs of the game to that point. A utility asset for EMU, Easter needed just four batters to breeze through the opposition in the sixth frame. Senior Holden Cook (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Casady) and sophomore Tyler Helgeson (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) closed out the seventh and eighth innings, respectively. After allowing eight runs through the first five frames, EMU's hurlers responded to blank the home team in each of its final three trips to the plate.
Offensively, the Eagles were able to muster just five hits on the day. Senior Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice) turned in a pair of knocks to record his second multi-hit game of the season, while junior transfer Gabe Denton (Clare, Mich.-Clare (North Iowa) delivered the team's only RBI, his sixth of the young season.
After its defense turned an inning-ending double play to end a WMU scoring threat in the first, the Eastern offense went back to work in the top of the second with a chance to score the game's first run. With senior Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) on first following a walk and advancement on a passed ball, it was fellow senior Eli Gora (Cincinnati, Ohio-Anderson) that recorded the first hit of the day for EMU to put Eagles at first and third. From there, Denton laid down a well-executed bunt, which scored Jones and put EMU ahead, 1-0. An intended sacrifice, Denton beat out the throw to add a single to his stat line.
Up 1-0 in the bottom of the second, Eastern fell victim to serious miscues in the field. EMU's two errors, coupled with four Bronco hits, saw the home team take a 3-1 lead by the end of the frame. Eastern, not aided by the frigid temperatures and wet playing conditions, suffered another error in the bottom of the third, but was able to recover nicely and keep the score at bay, 3-1, after three innings.
Unfortunately for the Green and White, Western was able to keep momentum through the remainder of the first six innings as the Broncos rattled home five additional runs and kept Eastern off the board to take an 8-1 advantage into the seventh.
Eastern showed signs of success throughout the contest, but struggled to convert its scoring chances. That trend was illustrated in the top half of the eighth inning. After getting runners to the corners with two outs, the Eagles were caught stealing at the beginning of the ensuing at-bat. That ended Eastern's best scoring chance of the late innings, and kept the Eagles down seven, 8-1.
Although EMU got one runner on in the ninth, it was not enough to mount a comeback effort against the Broncos in the Sunday matchup as the home team kept EMU off the board for the seventh consecutive frame and finished out the game, 8-1.
The four-game series between the Eagles and Broncos will conclude tomorrow, Monday, March 29, with a double-dip of seven-inning games beginning at 12:05 p.m. For the most up-to-date information on all things EMU baseball, continue to visit EMUEagles.com and follow the team on social media at @EMU_Baseball.
