TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped its series opener to the University of Toledo, 10-2, Thursday, April 2. The loss halts EMU's six-game winning streak.
John Carmichael (Destrehan, La./Destrehan/McCLennan C.C.) (0-5) started on the mound and went six innings, allowing four earned runs off nine hits while striking out one and walking three as he was tagged with the loss. Toledo's Nathan Leninger (6-0) earned the win.
How it Happened
Eastern Michigan struck early at Scott Park, pulling even with the Rockets in the second inning when Bruce Jellison (Hartland, Mich./Hartland/Wabash Valley) singled to center to score Ty Stecko (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin/Mount St. Mary's) and tie the game at one. After Toledo regained the lead in the third, Jellison knocked in his second run in the fourth inning with a groundout, allowing Devan Zirwas (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny/VCU) to cross the plate and bring it to 2-2.
Carmichael limited the Rockets to four runs (all earned) over six innings, but a turning point arrived in the bottom of the sixth. Toledo's J.P. Wagner broke the tie with a two-run triple, putting the hosts ahead for good. In the seventh, defensive miscues unraveled the Eagles as two errors fueled a five-run outburst, ballooning Toledo's lead to 9-2. The Rockets tallied another run in the eighth to reach double digits.
Eastern saw two batters reach base in the ninth inning before ultimately falling to the Rockets, 10-2.
