YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team defeated Toledo, 4-3, Friday, March 26, inside the Chippewa Club. In doing so, the Eagles earned their first conference win of the season to move to 1-4 in league play, 6-8 overall.
"We did a great job of playing with high energy and positive emotion," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "Getting the doubles point was huge because it allowed us to play from ahead for the entire. Our No. 1 and No. 2 teams both played exceptionally well and really set the tone for the match."
The Eagles came out with energy, clinching the doubles point for the first time against conference competition. It was redshirt junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School (Eastern Florida State)) and redshirt freshman Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) at No. 1 earning the first win of the day, 6-2. The No. 2 pairing of redshirt juniors Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio Cebes (Wright State)) and Grace Whitney (Imlay City, Mich.-Imlay City (Wright State)) secured the point for Eastern, winning 6-2. Pelayo and Whitney most recently won Mid-American Conference Doubles Team of the Week, March 24, and with the win today, extend their win streak to seven straight double matches.
"Vasavi kept up her great run at No. 3 and Emma-Lou had a clutch performance at No. 4. She came behind in both sets to clinch the win," added Wiseman.
In singles action, Ganesan was first to finish, downing her opponent in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3. Meanwhile, redshirt sophomore Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin (Salem)) earned her second win this season at No. 6, beating the rival 6-2, 6-3. Saving the best for last, redshirt freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sur-I'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau)) claimed victory for herself and the team, winning 7-5, 7-6, at No. 4.
The Green and White head to the University at Buffalo to take on the Bulls Sunday, March 28, at 11 a.m. To stay up to date with Eastern Michigan tennis, fans can also follow the team on Twitter (@EMUEaglesTennis) and Instagram (@EMU_Tennis).
