Volleyball Falls at Miami in Series Opener

OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped its Mid-American Conference affair at Miami University in four sets (18-25, 21-25, 25-21, 22-25) tonight, March 19, inside Miami's Millett Hall. The Eagles fall to 7-9 overall, while the RedHawks improve to a 9-8 mark.
Four Eagles posted double-figure kill performances with sophomore Alayna Jansky (Mukwonago, Wis.-Mukwonago) leading the way with 14 kills. Seniors Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan) and April Houston (Minneapolis, Minn.-Southwest), and sophomore Samantha Basham (Granville, Ohio-Newark Catholic) each added 11.
Quarterbacking the Green and White offense was sophomore Jayden Otto (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Prairie Ridge), who tallied 46 assists. The setter also contributed nine digs and three kills.
Defensively, EMU was led by freshman Bella Hommes (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern) with 25 kills, while Strefling and Janskey notched 19 and 11, respectively. Additionally, redshirt sophomore Raeven Chase (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Michael Power St. Joseph Catholic) posted a team-high four blocks.
Eastern Michigan posted a .218 attack percentage (53-17-165), while Miami boasted a .261 clip (68-20-184). The Eagles led in service aces (7-4), while the RedHawks led in every other statistical categories: kills (68-53), assists (66-50), digs (90-80), and blocks (6-5).
EMU struggled to find its offense in the first two sets, as the RedHawks took the 16-9 advantage in the first game. MU continued its momentum and posted the 23-14 led, but the Eagles posted a on 4-0 run, but ultimately fell in the first set, 25-18.
Down one set, Miami continued its energy as they took the 6-3 early lead in the second game. However, four-straight EMU points tied the set up at 7-all. The scoring went back-and-forth until MU took the 18-13 lead. The Eagles sparked a 7-0 scoring stint to gain the 20-18 advantage, but Miami claimed the second set, 25-21, off a 7-1 drive.
Eastern Michigan started the third game strong with an 8-4 lead, but over the next few possessions Miami tied up the set at 16-apiece. The scoring went back-and-forth, and the Eagles pulled away to extend the match to a fourth set with a 25-21 victory.
Down two sets to one, the Green and White posted an 8-5 edge to begin the fourth set. Eastern Michigan continued its momentum over the next few volleys to stay in the 16-14 advantage. However, Miami started to spark a 7-3 run to regain the lead, 21-19. Ultimately, MU won the set, 25-22, and claimed the match 3-1.
EMU will conclude a two-match series with Miami Saturday, March 20. The match will begin at 5 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
