Track & Field Prepares for Outdoor Season Opener

The Eagles head to Tampa, Fla. for the USF Bulls Invitational
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University track & field program will open up its outdoor season with a trip to Tampa, Fla. for the University of South Florida's Bulls Invitational. The two-day event takes place Friday and Saturday, March 19-20. Friday action begins at 1 p.m. with the men's hammer throw, while the women's javelin kicks off Saturday's schedule at 10:00 a.m.
For Eastern, this will be its first time competing outside in 664 days. Last year, two weeks after the 2019 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, the outdoor season was canceled due to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic.
At the last outdoor opener, Eastern competed at Georgia Tech's Yellow Jacket Invitational, March 15-16, 2019. At the meet, the men's and women's teams combined for nine podium finishes while several others registered personal-bests. A pair of Eagles took home the gold as then-senior Cameron Hart won the long jump (7.15m) and Tyler Underwood captured the 400m dash (48.65).
There are a number of notable returners poised to make an impact due to the extra year of outdoor eligibility extended by the NCAA. On the men's side, graduate students Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio-Huron) and Roderic Wilson (Atlanta, Ga.-Blanche Ely) are set to add their skills to the field and track, respectively. For the women, they will add graduate students Kristine Bourg (Shorewood, Ill.-Joliet West), Kolby Ganther (Park City, Kan.-Northeast Magnet (Garden City C.C.)), Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga), and Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Illinois-Montini Catholic).
