Eastern saw Pelayo and Whitney earn their second doubles win of the season

CINCINNATI, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team lost to Xavier, 7-0, inside Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club in Cincinnati, Ohio, Saturday, Feb. 6.
"Today we ran head first into a buzz saw. Beating Xavier was always going to be a tough task, we needed to be near perfect to have a chance, and we just couldn't pull it off." said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman "There were definitely some positive things today. Grace and Luisa got their second consecutive win in doubles. Julia lost another extremely close three set match. We worked hard and Xavier's coach Matthews even went out of his way to compliment the teams competitiveness and fight."
The Eagles were unable to grab the doubles point, as Xavier claimed two of the three matches. Redshirt juniors Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio Cebes) and Grace Whitney (Imlay City, Mich.-Imlay City) earn their second doubles win on the season, taking out their competition in the No. 2 spot, 6-4. Redshirt junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School) and redshirt freshman Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) lost their match 6-3 in the No. 1 spot. Redshirt sophomore Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin) and redshirt freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sure-I'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) in the No. 3 spot, fell 6-1.
In singles play, the Green and White struggled to earn a point. Piatek in the No. 6 spot put up the biggest fight, pushing the match to three sets, losing 6-2, 4-6, and 12-10. Pommiers and Pelayo battled but fell to their competition in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-4, and 6-3 and 6-2, respectively. EMU ultimately lost 7-0 to the Musketeers. The Eagles move to 2-2 in the 2021 spring season.
