PEORIA, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team falls to 2-4 this season after dropping matches against UIC, 2-4, and Bradley University, 1-4, in doubleheader action Saturday, Feb. 13.
"This is not the result we were hoping for this weekend," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman "As a coaching staff, we didn't do a good enough job of making sure the team was prepared for two tough back-to-back matches. That is something we will rectify in practice, as we have a number of doubleheaders coming up over the next three weeks."
Match 1: EMU 2, UIC 4
It was redshirt junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School) and sophomore Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) who came out victorious in doubles action (6-4), moving them to 2-1 at the No. 1 spot in 2021. Pairings at the No. 2 and No.3 spots fell, as the Eagles were unable to gain the doubles point.
Redshirt junior Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio Cebes) put the first point on the board for EMU, winning in the No. 3 singles spot in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Popma earned another victory in the match, battling back after losing the first set (2-6, 6-4, 6-3) to earn a point for her team. Ganesan went back and forth with her opponent but could not hang on, losing 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). The Eagles lost 2-4 to the Flames, as they were unable to lock in another win.
Match 2: EMU 1, Bradley 4
The duo of redshirt juniors Pelayo and Grace Whitney (Imlay, Mich.-Imlay City) continued to dominate in the No. 2 spot, defeating their competition, 6-4. The Green and White were unable to secure the doubles point after hard fought battles as the No. 1 and No. 3 pairings both fell, 7-6.
In singles play, the Eagles gained a point from Pelayo in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) from the No. 3 spot. The Porto, Portugal native moves to 5-1 this season in singles. Freshman Vered Bert (Ra'Anana, Israel-Aviv) battled to the end but lost, 6-4, 6-3. Eastern failed to secure another point, ultimately falling to Bradley, 4-1.
