The Eagles will host UMKC in its first home match inside the Chippewa Club this season
YPSILANTI/DETROIT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University tennis team will open the doors at the Chippewa Club when they invite the University of Missouri-Kansas City for the front end of doubleheader action Sunday, Feb. 21. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Following the competition, the Eagles will head to Detroit, where they will compete at Wayne State University at 7 p.m.
Eastern (2-4; 0-0 MAC) is coming off tough results, Feb. 13, where it lost to UIC, 2-4, and Bradley, 1-4. The Green and White saw a shining light in the weekend's results as redshirt junior Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio Cebes) went 2-0 in singles play and moved to 5-1 in the No. 3 spot. The redshirt junior is one of two players in the Mid-American Conference to secure five singles wins at this point in the season.
Kansas City (0-2; 0-0 Summit) looks for its first win of the season. The Roos travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. to play Western Michigan Saturday, Feb. 20, before coming to Ypsilanti the following day. Wayne State (1-1; 0-0 GLIAC) welcomes EMU to Doris J. & Donald L. Duchene Sr. Athletic Facility after losing 0-7 to WMU, Feb. 17.
Behind the Porto, Portugal native, redshirt freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sur-I'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) holds a winning record of 3-2 from the No. 5 spot in singles action. In doubles play, redshirt junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School) and redshirt sophomore Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) led the way for the Eagles in the No. 1 spot. The duo holds a 4-2 overall record, 2-2 (No. 1) and 2-0 (No. 2), as well as being the only doubles team to secure a win last weekend against UIC, Feb. 13. Pelayo and classmate Grace Whitney (Imlay, Mich.-Imlay City) moved up to 3-3 overall, 3-1 since moving to the No. 2 spot, and were the only pairing to earn a win against Bradley, Feb. 13.
