DAYTON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University tennis team earned a big win at Dayton, Friday, Feb. 5, 4-3. EMU now moves to 2-1 on the year after a commanding doubles performance.

"We did a great job of starting fast in both doubles and singles today." said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman "We made a few changes to our doubles lineup and they responded with a dominant performance. Grace and Luisa were also able to get their first double win as Eagles!"

Wiseman continued to say, "We were able to get three quick singles wins at the No. 2, 3, and 5 spots, to clinch the win right away. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the last three singles matches, but we battled hard for each one."

The Eagles were off to a hot start when they breezed through the doubles matchups. It was redshirt junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School) and redshirt freshman Isabelle Popma (Stapshorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education), playing in the No. 1 spot, who struck first with a 6-1 victory. The pair moved up to the No. 1 spot after securing a 2-0 start at the No. 2 slot, Jan. 30 and Jan. 31. Redshirt juniors Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio Cebes) and Grace Whitney (Imlay City, Mich.-Imlay City) finished next with a 6-2 win, claiming the doubles point for Eastern and their first doubles win as Eagles. Redshirt sophomore Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin) and redshirt freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sure-A'Idour, France-Saint Dominique) ended doubles play besting their competition 6-2, and making it a clean sweep for the Green and White.

EMU kept the energy going in singles play, rattling off three-straight wins to clinch the match early, all in straight sets. Pommiers finished first, 6-3 and 6-0, moving to 3-0 in singles matchups this season. The next point came from Pelayo, scoring 6-1 and 6-1, as she also moves to 3-0 on the year. The matchup clinching point came from Ganesan earning her first singles win of the season, 6-2 and 6-2. The redshirt junior is now 1-2 in singles action. Eastern Michigan fought hard in the final three singles matchups but was unable to come out victorious. The Eagles wrapped up the night defeating Dayton 4-3, and move to 2-1 in the 2021 spring season.

The Eagles have a quick turnaround as they travel to Cincinnati to play at Xavier Saturday, Feb. 6. The match will take place at Jim and Mary Brockhoff Family Tennis Facility and starts at 5 p.m. Fans can go to EMUEagles.com for the full results and recap, postmatch.
