The Green and White will play at Dayton, Feb. 5, and at Xavier, Feb. 6

DAYTON/CINCINNATI, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University tennis team heads south again for the weekend, traveling to the University of Dayton Friday, Feb. 5 with action starting at 7 p.m. Then the team turns to Cincinnati, where they will compete against Xavier University Saturday, Feb. 6, starting at 5 p.m.

Eastern (1-1; 0-0 MAC) will challenge a Dayton team (0-1; 0-0 A-10) that started the season with a 1-6 loss to Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, Jan. 31. On the same day, the Eagles lost 2-5 to Youngstown State University, making both teams hungry for a win. On Saturday,  Feb. 6, the Green and White will be at Xavier (0-0; 0-0 Big East), a squad that will begin its season, Feb. 5 against UIC.

In singles action, redshirt junior Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio Cebes) and redshirt freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sur-I'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) remain undefeated, both starting the season 2-0 after claiming wins at Cleveland State (Jan. 30) and Youngstown State (Jan. 31). Pelayo secured her two wins at the No. 2 spots, while Pommiers earned both victories in the No. 5 spot, and scored a point for EMU in straight-sets. The redshirt freshman was named Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week by the league office, Feb. 3, for her weekend performance.

It's the No. 2 spot holding it down for the Green and White in doubles play. Redshirt junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School) and redshirt freshman Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) have started the season strong as a pair, winning their first doubles matches to begin 2-0. The duo bested the competition at Cleveland State 6-2, Jan. 30, and then beat the opposition 6-4 at Youngstown State, Jan. 31. The combo was named MAC Doubles Team of the Week, Feb. 3, as Eastern swept the weekly conference awards.
