Track & Field returns to Grand Valley State University for the Snowdown Showdown

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University track & field teams return to action this weekend for the Grand Valley State University Snowdown Showdown in Allendale, Mich. The meet will begin Friday, Feb. 5, at 6:30 p.m. and wrap-up competition Saturday, Feb. 6, inside the Kelly Family Sports Center.

For the Green and White, this is its second trip to Allendale, Mich. this season. EMU's first trek to Ottawa County came on Jan. 23, when the Eagles participated in the Mike Lints Alumni Open. At the meet, redshirt sophomore Ronald Brandal (Huron, Ohio-Huron) set a new career-high in the mile with a 4:12.26 time. Meanwhile, senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) recorded a personal-best in the shot put as she produced a 15.29m throw.

Most recently, the Eagles picked up three event titles at the Sid Sink Invitational, Jan. 29, hosted by Bowling Green State University. Junior Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peter's) captured the 60m hurdles crown with a time of 8.74 seconds, which is currently the fastest mark in the Mid-American Conference. For Wade, she has not lost a 60m hurdles event since placing fourth at the Silverston Invitational, Feb. 21, 2020. The Ohio product also rounds-out the top-10 in the conference in the 60m dash (7.75).

Meanwhile, junior Nina Ward (Fairfield, Ohio-Fairfield) recorded a career-best 60m hurdles time of 9.53, good for seventh place. Her previous best came last week at the Mike Lints Alumni Open, Jan. 23, where she registered a 10.02 clip. Additionally, Ward leaped 5.53m to win the long jump at the Sid Sink Invitational, which is tied for seventh-best in the conference.

Graduate student Alisha St. Louis (D'abadie, Trinidad and Tobago-St. Francois Girls College (Johnson C. University)) grabbed the top spot in the triple jump with a strong 11.41m bound. The Trinidad and Tobago native has won the triple jump in two-of-three events so far in her career at Eastern. Moreover, her top mark of 11.51m ties for second in the MAC, just .01m behind the first place mark.

Lastly, senior Ariel Floyd (Mount Clemens, Mich.-Chippewa Valley (Olivet College)) recorded a career-high in the weight throw with a 18.39m heave. For Floyd, she has now produced a new best in the weight throw in three consecutive meets, with her most recent mark putting her at the No. 5 spot in the conference.

Also earning PRs in the weight throw last weekend were senior Savanah Luthman (Minster, Ohio-Minster) (17.00m) and sophomore Miranda Cadwell (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield South) (17.11m) which rank 11th and 10th in the MAC, respectively.

Overall, the women's side currently holds two first place spots in the MAC. Sophomore Alyson Davis (Summerfield, N.C.-Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts) is first in the 60m dash (7.53) while Wade is the top 60m hurdler (8.74).

The men are eager to get back to work at GVSU after not competing last week. However, the men's team currently controls three top positions in the conference. Junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) in the 3000m (8:05.34), sophomore Richie Sadler (Greenfield, S.C.-Greer (Coastal Carolina)) in the triple jump (14.26m), and senior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) in the weight throw (22.28m).
