KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team lost a close competition to Western Michigan University, 195.975-196.025, Sunday, Feb. 21, in Kalamazoo, Mich. The team score ties the ninth-best all-time, while the squads' beam score of 49.350 is the highest in program history.
"That was fun today," said Head Coach Katie Minasola. "We had some really great performances today and the beam rotation was rock solid! We talk often about finishing the meet and that's exactly what we did. I'm so proud of this team and energy they brought."
Eastern had a strong start on bars, hitting 49.050 on the event. Senior Jada Rondeau (Savage, Minn.-Central) led the way, tying her career-high of 9.875 to place first. Classmate Cortney Bezold (Maineville, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) scored 9.850, finishing second. Sophomore Hadyn Crossen (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) and freshman Raisa Boris (Brooklyn Park, Minn.-Park Center) each added scores of 9.800, as the Eagles started the meet on top, 49.050-48.925.
Scoring 48.800 on vault in the second rotation, EMU trailed after two, 97.650-97.825. Junior Carly Kosanovich (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) topped the lineup, scoring 9.750 and placing fifth. Senior Cali Harden (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and Crossen chipped in scores of 9.725, while Parris and Roberts added two scores of 9.700.
The Green and White were unable to pull ahead after some big performances on floor as EMU still trailed WMU, 146.625-146.850. Rondeau again paced all Eagles, scoring 9.875 and placing third. Boris earned a career-high of 9.850, tying for fourth. Roberts hit 9.825, placing sixth, while junior Shannon Gregory (Edison, N.J.-John P. Stevens) added a 9.725. Crossen chipped in a score of 9.700 to round out the scoring five.
Going into the final rotation, Eastern Michigan looked to mount a comeback in the final event, a feat they have accomplished twice this season; at the Temple Triangular, Feb. 16, and at Northern Illinois, Feb. 19. Rondeau continued to lead the charge, scoring a 9.950 to tie for first, and solidifying herself as second all-time in the event at Eastern. Gregory also had a personal-best of 9.875, finishing third. Parris and Crossen tied for fourth, both earning 9.850. Senior Brianna Price (Kings Mountain, N.C.-Homeschool) added a season-high 9.825, as the Eagles posted a season-high beam score of 49.350, setting the new program record on the event all-time.
EMU ended the day with an overall score of 195.975 but the valiant effort was not enough to complete the comeback as Western hit 196.025. This is the first time since Feb. 8, 2016 at the University of Michigan that an Eastern team has earned 195.975, as it ties for ninth in program history.
In the all-around competition, Rondeau placed second with a season-high score of 39.200, which also ties her career-high. Crossen finished third, scoring a new personal-best, 39.075.
Eastern returns home to the Convocation Center to celebrate Senior Night Sunday, March 7, in the Eastern Michigan Triangular. The meet will feature Bowling Green State and Air Force with action scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Fans can watch the meet on ESPN3 or follow along on Twitter. BGSU will make the trip to Ypsilanti for the second time this season, while USAFA will compete against the Eagles for the second time this season after seeing each other at the GymQuarters Invitational, Feb. 12.
